A realistic, honest and very heart-warming rom-com about a mature gay couple in a long-term relationship, cleverly seasoned with slice of life and food genre elements.
Not the typical fluffy, fan-servicing and exaggerated BL mass-production dramas, but a well-crafted story with emotional depth, beautifully written and masterfully fleshed characters and delicious food.

  • Okashi no Ie

    6. Okashi no Ie

    Japanese Drama - 2015, 10 episodes

    8.5

A cozy slow-paced and laid-back slice of life drama, about the beauty of simple things in life, the comfort of hanging out with our childhood friends, the warmth of being our true selves with our loved ones, and the bitter-sweetness of growing up and leaving our childhood selves and memories behind.
Outstanding acting, especially from Odagiri Joe and a touching, meaningful ending song.

  • Kamome Diner

    7. Kamome Diner

    Japanese Movie - 2006

    8.5

A warm, feel-good movie about food, sismance, different cultures, same worries and a suberb performance from Kobayashi Satomi.

"- I envy you. Doing exactly what you want.
    - No, I just don't do what I don't like. "

"But a sad person is sad in any country.
Anywhere you go, sad is sad.

  • Happy Old Year

    8. Happy Old Year

    Thai Movie - 2019

    8.5

Confronting our past, our memories and feelings, that are tightly connected with people and objects of our lives,
    is never an easy job.
It takes a lot of courage (and perhaps time) to decide what we need to let go, what is really important, and successfully move on with our lives.
But can we really let go of the things that are parts of us and makes us who we are, though?
A story beautifully told, shot and acted.

  • A Scene at the Sea

    9. A Scene at the Sea

    Japanese Movie - 1991

    8.5

A quiet, slow-paced and nuanced film from Takeshi Kitano, with poignant cinematography (formed by long static takes and clear linear camera movements), minimal dialogue and a wonderful, dreamy score by Joe Hisaishi.
It tells the simple tale of a young man who dreams of becoming a competitive surfer and the silent, yet emotional heavy, love with his always doting girlfriend. Despite neither of them speaks a single word through the entire film (since they’re both deaf-mute), there is an instant attachment to this couple: the looks they exchange, their contented smiles hold more emotional weight than any spoken dialogue.

  • Would You Like a Cup of Coffee?

    10. Would You Like a Cup of Coffee?

    Korean Drama - 2021, 12 episodes

    8.5

Cozy, feel-good, soothing and very heart-warming, this little gem was a breath of fresh air among all the angsty, full of cliches autumn dramas.
It almost feels as if I watched a slice-of-life j-drama, if you know what I mean.
A great watch, with every episode being a treat to the soul, and not only for coffee lovers like me!

  • Glasses

    12. Glasses

    Japanese Movie - 2007

    8.5

    Simplicity is so very underrated...
Finding pleasure simply in enjoying a meal, idling, looking at the ocean, listening to the waves crashing, "twilighting".
If not for this lousy pandemic, perhaps I wouldn't appreciate its calmness so much, or feel so jealous of not being there too!

    14. She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat Season 2

    Japanese Drama - 2024, 20 episodes

    8.5

Happiness is sharing delicious food with the ones you love!
Soothing and comforting, with a delicate as well as considerate approach to some serious, deep and complicated matters, and a wonderful (even if a bit beautified) depiction of a slow-burn romance and sismance.
Nishino Emi did a fantastic job depicting the fascinating character of Kasuga, with her reserved persona, her pragmatic thoughts and actions, her warm and compassionate feelings, and her sad backstory.
    A heartwarming and rewarding watch.

  • Little Forest: Summer & Autumn

    16. Little Forest: Summer & Autumn

    Japanese Movie - 2014

    8.5

Such a unique, heartwarming, soothing experience this film was!
Fantastic cinematography and camera work that depicted the ethereal beauty of rural Japan so gracefully! The moisty, foggy rice paddies, the cloudy skies, the colourful hills were just astonishing...
The documentaristic, narrative technique used, combined with Hashimoto's beauty, her soft voice and the well-fitted music made this experience even more fascinating!
The perfect choice for a lazy autumn weekend.

  • Little Forest: Winter & Spring

    17. Little Forest: Winter & Spring

    Japanese Movie - 2015

    8.0

Like in the first movie, the cinematography, scenery, music and ambience were amazing!
Especially her bicycle rides were awesome.
Slightly disappointed, though, due to the rushed, incoherent ending...

    26. Tetsu Ota Michiko, 2 Man Kiro

    Japanese Drama - 2022, 12 episodes

    8.0

With a unique theme and approach, this is a soothing, feel-good short drama about daily train trips of an otaku train enthusiast enjoying beautiful rural scenery and wonderful photography.
Though it's slow-paced, with minimal dialogue and encounters, not much of a plot, not much character depth and an awkward introduction theme, every episode feels like a healing experience full of picturesque countryside places around secluded or abandoned train stations, with vivid forest, sea and train sounds, delicious food, and interesting information about  new and old train models, routes and destinations.
Great for a relaxing weekend watch.

  • Isu

    29. Isu

    Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes

    7.5

An omnibus of 8 women-centered stories (and their chairs).
Some of them were bizarre, some others touching, a few were dark and twisted, or symbolic and confusing, but this unorthodox approach was definitely gripping and challenging.
    Definitely not for everyone...

There are many Japanese dramas with creative, unusual plots, and this short drama is definitely one of those!
Some times it is awkward cringy and over the top, some times relaxing and comfortable, some other times emotional and even philosophical, but definitely a fun, oddly addicting and entertaining watch.
