In August 2021, he was arrested by the Beijing police on charges of rape. He went to trial and was found guilty of the rape of three different women, one who was under 18 at the time, and sentenced to prison for 13 years. After his sentence, he is set to be deported to Canada. He was also found guilty of tax evasion in 2019-2020 and was fined 600 million Yuan.

In 2016, he was accused of sexual assault. The case revolved around South Korea's legal definition of "lack of consent," which often requires evidence of physical resistance or incapacitation. Despite the accuser presenting evidence of bruising, he was cleared of all charges. He subsequently filed a counter-lawsuit for false accusation. In 2017, the accuser was found not guilty of making a false accusation, but upon appeal, she was sentenced to eight months in prison for defamation in February 2018.

In March 2019, he became involved in a controversy (part of the Burning Sun Scandal) when he received an adult-related video (taped and sent without the woman’s consent) via private message from Jung Joon Young and did not report it. A few days later, he apologized for his actions and decided to leave the group.
