My Planned Super Sentai Watch Order
At this point I feel somewhat comfortable in saying Super Sentai just isn't my thing. I'm enjoying Shinkenger so far though, depending on how I feel about the next couple of seasons I'll probably cut this list down a bit.
Key Interests: Lu/Pat, Timeranger, Gokaiger, King Ohger.

1. Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger
Japanese Drama - 2024, 48 episodes
Boonboomgers thrives on the general charisma of it's heroes, its captivating sense of style and the charm of its reoccurring villain trio, however attempts to give said heroes depth fall flat and the antics of the villains aren't to my taste. The well executed concept of high profile deliveries in the first episode lacks the same punch throughout the rest of the show despite its synergy with its other strengths, this is likely due to budget issues, but impacts my enjoyment of the show regardless.

2. Juuken Sentai Gekiranger
Japanese Drama - 2007, 49 episodes
Through subpar acting and mostly uninteresting characters on the protagonist front, Gekiranger finds it's appeal in the opposing methods of the different schools of Juken, one providing "training through living" and the other giving anti-therapy to the focal antagonist. Impressively, an initially annoying lead becomes somewhat endearing through his discipline, and the power scaling and struggles of the villains just about reach the point of investing, but the slog of the motions and writers keeping their limited cards too close to their chest for too long prevents me from saying i think the show is overall good.

3. Mashin Sentai Kiramager
Japanese Drama - 2020, 45 episodes
While character dynamic focussed stretches give the show a solid sense of pacing and make the relatively shallow cast feel more fleshed out, they often feel incomplete and missed potential for individual arcs stands out a lot. Somewhat impressively the more trope-y episodes are still entertaining due to their execution, the show has some strong writing. The costume design for the MOTW lends itself well to their antics and often plays into the comedy of the excessive force of the Kiramagers, but as one of the villains point out, they are ultimately asinine.

4. Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger
Japanese Drama - 2003, 50 episodes
just watch Kuuga instead, this is so boring.
-
5. Samurai Sentai Shinkenger
Japanese Drama - 2009, 49 episodes
Shinkenger's aesthetics drawing elements from origami theatre and folklore, realised through a period drama set in the modern day, gives the show a unique vibe, but while seeing the cast adapt to their new lives and struggling to leave the old behind is endearing early on, they begin to feel more stagnant in the second half.
-
6. Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger
Japanese Drama - 2016, 48 episodes
Zyuohger's villains feel very disconnected from the show and the attempts to flesh them out feel equally tacked on, even if some of that content is interesting. The flanderisation of the most well realised character lasts just long enough before leading into the last stretch of his arc to be annoying, but even at his worst he's got more going on than the rest of the cast. I don't dislike any of this but I don't hate it either.

7. Choushinsei Flashman
Japanese Drama - 1986, 50 episodes
Relevant up to episode 12:
I dunno if this applies to all Showa sentai but the dated nature kind of makes it ambiguous if the camp is intentional or not so i can buy into the sillier stuff easier, I don't think i'd have been as interested in a runaway fridge in the other seasons I've seen so far
The DNA soup monsters work more for me than in Abaranger because the creatures are more horrifying and don't speak so you can't really tell if they're thinking or in pain or if they're guided by anything other than a mishmash of instincts and there are monsters who kind of play into that ambiguity.
I'm guessing the idea is that as the main cast get endeared towards earth you get endeared towards them, the show does seem interested in showing them building lives on earth but it'll depend on elements returning and being further developed for me to really buy into that, which i don't think they'll do as the status quo of the show demands they be blank slates
