Polyamory (and alternative relationship styles)

!!SOME OF THE NOTES ARE SPOILERS!!

This list will NOT include historical polygamous relationships (even though Mishil's dynamic was interesting in Queen Seon Deok). Also lavender marriages don't automatically count.

Qualifications for being on this list! At least 1 person in the dynamic is comfortable with consensual non-monogamy, which is why Kakafukaka is on this list even though they do not end up in a non-monogamous relationship. The show I Have Three Boyfriends would NOT count because the lead character has no intention to give the opportunity for her lovers to consent to a non-monogamous dynamic. That's just cheating. I also did not include transactional relationships like in Ashita, Watashi wa Dareka no Kanojo

Terms defined:

  • Polyamory, a consenting relationship in which people are allowed to date more than one person.
  • Triad, a dynamic in which three people are all dating each other
  • V, when one person is dating two people, but the two other people are not dating each other
  • Swinging, when partners exchange partners with another couple, usually as a one night stand
  • Parallel polyamory, when someone has multiple partners, but the other partners never see or meet each other
  • Meta (short for metamore), your partner's partner
  • FWB aka "friends with benefits," is when people have a casual sexual relationship often described as having "no strings attached." In jdramas this is usually called "sex friends."
  • ENM, ethical non-monogamy
  • Unicorn/Unicorn Hunter, this controversial relationship style in polyamorous circles describes when a couple chooses to date a new person who must date both people.
  • Nesting partner - partners who live together

Surprise, surprise. Was not expecting this one at all. In episode 8, Asahi says he wouldn't mind the protagonist two-timing him, or three-timing, or four-timing him. I'm not sure if he meant this in a conditional polyamory way (ex: until you get your memories back) or if he was saying he wouldn't mind in general. This is does not actually happen though, and is just something Asahi mentions. Still, that counts for this list!

Also interesting, and a HUGE SPOILER, but in episode 9 we learn that the protagonist has had a boyfriend the whole time. She has amnesia, that's how the story starts, and her boyfriend decides to pretend they're not together and tries dating her from step one all over again. Normally, I might expect him to tell her who he is and try to rebuild their relationship, but instead he lets her go on dates with other men as if she were single again.

So this is a lavender relationship between a gay man (Otoya) and a woman (Ruri). However, the woman falls in love with her husband while he finds the touch of a woman repulsive, describing it like a phobia. Typically, I wouldn't count a lavender relationship, but because Otoya's partner (Junpei) knows that Ruri is in love with Otoya, and neither Junpei nor Ruri mind that they are both in love with Otoya, I think it counts for at least something that is not your typical relationship style. It may be one-sided for her, but they all consider each other family. However...

    -------------
    SPOILERS
    -------------

Alas what are we to do? Ruri falls for Junpei too and they cheat together.  Still, Ruri wants the three of them to raise a child together and continue their home life as. Otoya ends up cheating on Junpei I guess in retaliation? But the guy he sleeps with is like "wait but that's beautiful" and Otoya ends up agreeing to a three-person relationship with Ruri and Junpei that I suppose is probably a V dynamic. The ending of the movie is literally "And that's when our family began" as they walk off together holding hands. I'm starting to realize this is a small trope in these kinds of stories (married couple cheats, someone gets pregnant (❤️), they three stay together.

It starts off like they're practicing parallel polyamory.  There are two married couples, and the first married couple has a V dynamic parallel style. However, the second married couple has one person who hasn't been informed of the third partner, which...of course would be cheating.

Ichiko ends up seeing a gigilo (Rei) to fulfil her own sexual needs as her husband only likes to have sex with one person at a time, and he is currently sleeping with his lover. However, after he quits sex work, Rei tries to build a relationship with Ichiko. In episode 5, Ichiko describes her relationship "open," however she isn't really honest about this with her husband :( When her husband leaves home, Ichiko kind of throws out the whole being "open" in her relationship in the hopes that she can repair the damage done to their marriage.

There's an interesting minor character who is getting divorced with his wife. They both seem to want to be together still, but she doesn't want to be legally married to her husband anymore. While this isn't fully explained, it's enough of an alternative relationship to count for this list ^_^

Honestly im also in love with the way the ML has zero expectations of relationship dynamics whether they are as friends or as lovers. Like he just takes people as they are and respects that with no assumptions. That's just so good... so good. I love him. The protagonist starts off not wanting an open relationship, though I don't think his partner hides his relationships. However, the polyamorous lead is clearly gung-ho about his partner finding a new partner and is like "yoooo triad squadddd" lmao They also actually literally define their relationship as polyamory. While I appreciate that's what two of the main characters were aiming for, this definitly would not be considered ethical non-monogamy because this is clearly not a consenting relationship. Along with the cheating there is poor communication and repeated crossing of boundaries. (If you watched The Ultimatum: Queer Love, the protagonist and his first boyfriend are basically Tiff and Mildred in terms of kissing their way through every conflict.) There's an emphasis on consent from an outside party, but it's never delivered on within the actual dynamic. The tone is comedic and silly.

In episode 7, Junko refers to her relationship as something between three people. This is not explicitly agreed upon between the two guys, Mutchy and Kiyoshi, but we can see there is some back and forth between them. Mutchy yields Junko to Kiyoshi, but he also fights to see her too, not really forfeiting like a classic SML would, but it also doesn't feel like a standard love triangle. But mostly, this is on the list because of the way that Junko seems to interpret the relationship. She also has no qualms going on dates with another man who is neither Mutchy nor Kiyoshi, and she has no issue with that man having a girlfriend. This doesn't exclude the possibility of it being cheating, but I just thought her outlook on dating was interesting.

Her husband later on is also a womanizer who is dating other women while engaged to her, but he promises to never be with another woman once they get married, and she seems fine with this arrangement.

Will update when I watch it too! ^_^

Update! I watched this and didn't feel the relationship dynamic was explicit enough for me personally, and that's probably because I really value direct communication with clearly defined dynamics in my relationships. I can see why it could be interpreted the way anon recommended it. The romance between the leads that anon mentions is mostly homoeroticism, while towards the end it becomes a lot of self-sacrifice, which in the context of youth dramas can be done by your friends (this is a rag-tag group) or for someone you love when it's also a romance drama. For me, because there's never the air that Longjie would want to date both Renyu and Biyu at the same time, I wouldn't count it.

While this drama breaks my first qualification for this list, "At least 1 person in the dynamic is comfortable with consensual non-monogamy," as we don't get an indication of this at any point, this recommendation is a good opportunity to reflect on the fact that not everyone's experience in non-monogamy has such clear-cut borders of "dating" vs "not dating." And for that alone I'll make it an exception to the list. It's a good reminder that there are lots of different ways to experience non-monogamy.

This is a story about a triad. It starts off really sweet before the relationship starts to crack.

I found this interesting as it felt pretty real. Jieun, the most experienced of the group in more than two dynamics, starts off pretty bluntly getting into rules. At first, I thought "oh her rules are pretty controlling. Is she going to grow out of that?" but as her characterization went on, I realized that's just where she is in life. I liked seeing how she tries to manipulate her jealousy, because it's a pretty real experience and something people do sometimes try to tackle that way. And I loved her line of "I'm not living an experiment," and suddenly realizing that's all that Yeon thought this was. Idk Minjun also brought something interesting to the table as the guy who  bragged about having two girlfriends, kind of bringing out that common insecurity people have about MFF arrangements. Each of them were characters who felt like they represented different perceptions and experiences of polyamory. It was kind of dope. They all had flaws they couldn't really overcome, and sometimes its worth watching a movie where people fail.

so I rewatched this and my thoughts on this drama has changed slightly. Quick summary for those unfamiliar. There's a love square, but important to this list is the love triangle between the ML (Tomo), SML (Hase), and the FL (Terada). Originally I put this show on this list because Hase wanted to marry Terada even if she continued to be intimate with Tomo, and he even offered to raise any children between Terada and Tomo if she got pregnant ❤️ (and there is a pregnancy scare). However, on my rewatch I realized Hase is some kind of aromantic and Terada would be functioning as his beard in a lavender relationship. As a rule, a lavender relationship does not count on its own; there have to be other qualities to it to be on this list.

However, whether or not this would remain as simply a lavender relationship isn't really explained once Hase gains feelings for Terada. If it were like, while Terada is married to Hase, he gained feelings for her and she could still have an intimate relationship with Tomo, then it would still count. But there's a sort of possessiveness that grows between the three, and whether or not they would still be open to Terada being non-exclusive isn't explained once those feelings come up. Could it count? Maybe.

REGARDLESS at the end of the last episode (SPOILERS), Terada narrates to the audience that she and Tomo (she calls him Hongyo) aren't boyfriend and girlfriend, but they'll continue to have a sexual/romantic relationship (it's translated as "sleeping arrangement"). So basically, they're "undefined" which automatically qualifies for this list. She does this after breaking up with Hase so I think it's kind of implied they are monogamish.

This is on the weird boundry of "this does not really count, but it sort of counts." Very unconsensual.

So these two did not communicate about what kind of relationship they were going to be in or anything. Because of this there's a misunderstanding where Ritsu assumed they were in an open relationship and Masumi assumed they were in a monogamous relationship. Yikes!

    Japanese Drama - 2025, 10 episodes

The FL Karen has some trauma from a previous relationship. Because of this she only likes dating casually, and doesn't consider her sexual partners her boyfriends. The first episode establishes her primary hookup person, Yuto-kun, who also has some sort of ambiguous relationship with "Dior-girl" (named for her scent by Karen). Neither Karen nor Yuto are in an exclusive sexual relationship, and Karen goes out of her way to flirt with other people as well.

However, the vibe for this show seems to be leaning towards eventually becoming monogamous with the ML named Teito. Will update when I learn more.

So, interesting, this features an interview with someone who has this lived experience, and its interspersed with fictional content inspired by this interview.

It starts off with our guy Nicky at the club with I think his friends? And he ends up taking two girls home who are fighting with each other but then they all hook up together. After that we meet Nicky's girlfriend (neither of the two women) and follow him into discovering he is attracted to men as well as women. It ends up being a cheating dynamic that has a messy breakup.

Later on he meets a new guy who he treasures, but when he goes back home he meets a woman named Cherry. She knows he has a boyfriend, but she's also interested in marrying him. She makes it clear she doesn't need him to break up with his boyfriend, but that he needs to be clear with him about their relationship if he wants the three of them to make this work together. While they have this conversation after she hooks up with him, she also describes this to Nicky like a lavender relationship for his parents.

    • MFF (hookup)
    • MFM (cheating)
    • MFM (polyamory??? lavender relationship???)

It's not clear if the boyfriend ended up staying after he learned that his lover was going to marry someone else. It's also not clear if the people involved would identify as polyamorous or not. This needed a bit more information to accurately asses the dynamics here.

However, this stays on the list because of Cherry who wants to date and marry a man who has a boyfriend, and who wants everyone involved to make informed choices about who they're dating.

So! This is not exactly non-monogamous as it is about a woman who exclusively wants to have one-night stands with people. However, this is an alternative way of seeking out people to be intimate with, and so on the list it goes! She makes a set of rules for herself for hooking up with people:

    1. She can't hook up with anyone she knows through work or is close to her
    2. She doesn't get involved with anyone who is married or has a partner
    3. The person she chooses has to be someone attractive who she'd actually want to be with
    4. Both people cannot be romantically interested in each other
    5. They need to use contraceptive and make preventative measures against STIs.

This is basically the story of a young woman (in her 30s) trying to get back into the dating game, who is kind of teetering between wanting to just hook-up with people, but also feeling like she wants to build a casual relationship with them.

When I started watching this, it seemed like this was going to go the typical J-drama route where she ends up only being with her first interest despite the premise, but she actually goes on dates with other guys after she hooks up with the first guy that she's really attracted to. So that was interesting. She seems monogamish as she isn't really interested in looking at more than one partner at a time (except in a gokon setting).

Momo (aka Takeshi) at one point asks if he can still be Iwaya's pet if she gets married (episode 5). Not that any throuple actually happens, but it counts for this list! Because her relationship with Momo is a secret, the show's dynamic is more like cheating.

a movie from 1965! An author of sex-positive books has a long-time girl who he doesn't want to marry, but can't break up with. Meanwhile, a fan of his work ends up sparking a relationship with him. Beware, there is rape. Anyway, eventually he ends up introducing the two women to each other, and the two hit it off right away! He thinks a little too well hehe. His fangirl also has a man, but he's currently at war. The ML is unfortunately a double-standards kind of guy and even slaps his girlfriend when she reunites with her boyfriend (who she wants to marry). Also the ML is kinda homophobic :|

This is another story where pregnancy (❤️) is involved in the dynamic between the protagonists.

    • FMF (the protagonists)
      • This began as cheating and eventually turned into a dynamic where people consented. Pretty sure this was a V? I'll leave the exact classification of their dynamic up to the audience though.

Megumi and Kotora are described as being sex friends. Kotora doesn't consider himself to be boyfriend-girlfriend with Megumi, but they're still seeing each other. It's the kind of relationship where Kotora gives Megumi's number to Ryuji when they all know he likes her. Also Megumi very clearly is not interested in being tied down to any one person (though she does seem interested in dating) and flirts with many different guys.

    • im not gonna try and categorize that one lmao its too complicated. (protagonists and others)

There's also an odd relationship dynamic with the rakugo teacher. He has a girlfriend??? who is also his second wife?? but he is also married. Anyway, the husband also tries to set his girlfriend up with his old friend from college. And he tells Kotora not to tell anyone about her, but also he introduces her to everyone so I'm not actually sure what's going on here. I think he is hiding the relationship from his wife though, so that's cheating.... right? Except that his wife and his girlfriend both know about each other and actually are good friends, and they keep their friendship a secret from their boyfriend/husband! Wait... maybe that's still cheating.

    • uhhhhhhh this is.... FMF? Yeah... but then its MF MF (supporting characters)
