  • Head over Heels

    1. Head over Heels

    Korean Drama - 2025, 12 episodes

    7.5
    • A mixed bag, but also half the things in the bag are my favorite thing ever so you have to sit there on the curb wondering about a better universe. On the good side:
      • The relationship between the main leads is very compelling. There's some good angst and great foil work, and they're cute.
      • A big (if somewhat complicated) win for adoptive moms.
      • Yoon Byung-hee plays a gender non-conforming man but he still gets to be a  full character with impact on the plot.
      • YMMV of course, but a rare drama where there isn't a villain at the end of the day; just the fact that anybody can end up doing awful things, but by the same token, no matter how far gone, it matters to try and do better (I'm built different; I loved Yeomhwa. Nasty sopping wet feral cat of a problem).
    • On the bad side (mostly the second half):
      • Annoying love triangle shit that was obviously never going anywhere.
      • The pacing goes out the window. If somebody told me they got cut from 16 episodes to 12, I would believe them. We get glimpses of backstory that never fully materialize (Yeomhwa gets basically nothing haha) and the plot moves like somebody played snakes and ladders with the script.
      •  What I like to call The Possession Problem: we spend less and less time with the main leads actually interacting because SOMEBODY is always fucking possessed.
        • I will admit that the reverse uno in episode 11/12 of Seong-a being possessed was very funny though. And overall, the actors were excellent and obviously having fun with the possession stuff. It just sucks to look at the back half of the drama and go wait. How much time did they actually spend with each other?
      • Sorry, no, Seong-a deserved better. Girl has had an absolutely awful 3+ years, and she didn't even get to graduate!!! Makes me wanna scream
  • KPop Demon Hunters

    2. KPop Demon Hunters

    Movie - 2025

    8.0
    • Frozen but make it Kpop, let's be real here
      • Down to the absolute banger of a soundtrack we're all going to be tired of hearing everywhere a year from now lol. Glass houses though, I loved Frozen, and I very much enjoyed this movie too, even if I'm out of the intended age demographic now
      • The characters are all lovable, the setup of the plot is ridiculously delightful, and the animation is a lot of fun. The theme, while similar to Frozen's, is still very lovely and unique in its emphasis on community & connection
    • In general, the writing's pretty tight but there are also some things that bugged me
      • Jinu's sacrifice is perfect narratively speaking but the way it came about felt a little sudden. Man is just suddenly there lol
      • I wish Zoey and Mira had more narrative agency. I understand there's only so much time in a movie especially with the story they were telling, but I wish they had more to do plot-wise
      • I felt we needed one more scene with Celine. Maybe they're banking on a sequel, but they really left her on an inconclusive note
  • The Divorce Insurance

    3. The Divorce Insurance

    Korean Drama - 2025, 12 episodes

    7.0
    • This is my bedtime drama, for better or worse
      • Little to no angst or miscommunication, this drama feels very calm and mature. It was never going to cause brainrot, but it was a nice way to wind down at the end of the day
      • They don't step outside of romcom territory much, so they also don't exactly push the divorce concept very far either. Stays pretty safe in general
    • Most every character was compelling, I loved their friendships, and the couples complimented each other well
      • I wouldn't have minded if they let Ah-young be single forever, or at least dug into her reasons for being solo more. There's reasons why that lifestyle exists and is attractive to people these days. But admittedly, Wong-shik is cute and funny
    • The first episodes are hilarious, but the comedy does start to drop off as the show goes on.  I think the people who enjoyed the more whimsical nature of the first few episodes may end up disappointed
    • In general, it feels like they did their insurance research pretty well, and I was willing to turn my brain off (bed time baby!)  but there's a couple points where they had to brute force the plot
      • Critically, no insurance agency would sell divorce insurance to a couple that is blatant about wanting a divorce, or having major relationship issues. Capitalistically speaking, it's just not realistic. They don't want to pay out, they're a business, and there's a limit to what 'programs' they'd want to pay for too
