Crime is an over used but under explored genre, often exploited for its shock value & commercial appeal. A deep dive into human psyche based on tense, chilling conversations rather than over-reliance on explicit gore & violence makes a more convincing plot as it has meticulously thought out characters (& their motives). If there's anything more disappointing than a crime thriller with obvious loop holes, it is a crime thriller NOT having morally ambiguous characters. As the plot thickens, you should find your allegiance shifting as you encounter plot twists which make you gasp out loud & turn your preconceived perceptions upside down almost forcing you to re-watch the series. Even if a drama is based on true events, the devil is in the details so the director can re-interpret the story or explore it from a completely new angle as in the case of 'The Lee Chun Jae/ Hwaseong' serial murders which took place between 1986 & 1991 but the culprit was identified on September 18, 2019 (after the stature of limitations for the case expired on 2006). So during the years in between, there was wide spread public outrage, panic, speculation & curiosity which lead to the creation & re-telling of multiple versions of the story.Memories of Murder, 2003 Confession of Murder, 2012 Signal, 2016 Tunnel, 2017The Scarecrow, 2026 : As the only drama made after the culprit's arrest, it retrospectively explores the investigation blind spots. So rather than a linear/ black-and-white morality based plot, a gripping yet vulnerable & morally ambiguous plot is closer to reality as it doesn't portray criminals as a spoilt fruits in the basket but rather crime itself as a dormant seed sown by the society itself in every human psyche.
