Lee Joon Gi a passé plus de cinquante auditions pendant un an dans l'espoir de décrocher un rôle sans réel succès. Le 28 juillet 2001, il est repéré par l'agence Mentor Entertainment alors qu'il passait une audition pour des agences cherchant de nouveaux talents. Ce n'est qu'en 2005 qu'il obtient son tout premier rôle principal dans le film "The King and the Clown".
