Annoverato tra i maggiori cineasti del cinema internazionale, ha diretto film di notevole successo come "Ultimo tango a Parigi, Novecento" e "L'ultimo imperatore", che gli valse l'Oscar al miglior regista e alla migliore sceneggiatura non originale.
Bertolucci è l'unico italiano ad aver vinto un Oscar per la regia. Nel 2007 gli fu conferito il Leone d'oro alla carriera alla 64ª Mostra internazionale d'arte cinematografica di Venezia e nel 2011 la Palma d'oro onoraria al 64º festival di Cannes.
