En 2012 Ryu empezó a actuar en cortos y producciones independientes antes de ser figurante en el largometraje de 2013 'INGtoogi: The Battle of Internet Trolls'.
Ryu llamó la atención por primera vez gracias a su actuación en 'Socialphobia' en 2015, pero no fue hasta más tarde ese mismo año que ganó reconocimiento público a través de su papel principal en el drama televisivo 'Reply 1988' junto a Lee Hye-ri, Park Bo-gum, Go Kyung-pyo, y Lee Dong-hwi.
En 2017 Ryu obtuvo un papel principal en la película histórica 'The King' por el cual ganó el premio a mejor actor revelación de cine en los premios 'Baeksang Arts Awards'. Ese mismo año, fue uno de los protagonistas de la película biográfica 'A Taxi Driver', la cual pasó a ser la película surcoreana más taquillera de ese año.
En diciembre de 2018 salió a la luz que Ryu habia donado 10 millones de wones a Greenpeace. Ha estado donando de forma frequente desde 2016, incluidas a las campañas como Salvémos el Ártico.
