No, that's not the reason. GZY's legitimacy was always in question and GSJ was always assumed to be the next SW due to seniority. He was younger than GHY but older than GZY.

It is plausible that the heir to the SW position was chosen based on their seniority in the Gong family. The Gong family has fewer male descendants so they are desperate for the adult males to reproduce.

This drama is suffering from too many dialogues and unnecessary lovey-dovey scenes.

The Story of Ming Lan has one of the best pace in C-costume dramas. I have no patience for bad pace C-dramas but have watched Ming Lan for more than once.
