CWD is much older than MX by at least 20 years in the novel. He's like a big brother figure for MX although he romantically loves her.

He will die in the end so I am beginning to detach my feelings from this series.

He was just scaring Mo Xi as he likes to see her squirm. He knows that MX loves her cousin sister, BFY, so much so he likes to use BFY as an object to torture MX.

Thank goodness, CWD's character has been white washed in this drama. Otherwise, you would have found his character crude if the script writer followed the one in the novel.

The relationships mimick the chaotic period at that time. WJG only wanted a woman and peaceful time to spend his life with. So, no romance was possible for those who were sensible.

BFY too. She is also simple minded and was only hoping for the best outcome out of the chaos they were experiencing.
