There's always someone who wants to be different in order to get people's attention. Imagine if a mere character who's good at getting high marks and getting beaten up is going to be more interesting than a protagonist who's a master of martial arts. In my opinion, in order to criticize there has to be a point to it, or you identify with the dull student with good grades who only gets beaten up.
