After reading the novel, his behavior made so much more sense to me. Xie Zheng was literally raised by his uncle to be a weapon, like, his whole childhood and youth were spent on battlefields, learning how to survive and kill, not how to communicate or process emotions. So for him, 'love' isn't about sweet words or being open, it's about action. Protecting her. Keeping promises. Showing up when it matters. He doesn't even know how to express feelings normally because no one ever taught him. And honestly? The fact that he loves at all, despite being trained his whole life to see emotions as weakness, says a lot. He's not being selfish on purpose, he just literally doesn't know any other way
