i was a little confused about that aswell, but if im not mistaken he goes to the police station and sees the video of her talking, and maybe figures out she can talk, then he went on and asked her if she could speak during the interview which made sense cuz why would he ask her that to him she can't, so im assuming he found out before the interview? im also confused about why she doesn't talk to her mom cuz she's the one who forced her to be mute😭😭
