The Ming envoy was irritating, but he foresaw the country’s downfall, and then one of the chefs said something to the FL before departing from Joseon, so much unfolded today that I ended up crying a lot. I’m relieved I only checked the comment section afterward, since there were tons of spoilers and hardly anyone bothered with spoiler tags.
Once again, Lee Chae Min delivered an outstanding performance, right alongside Yoona 😭💔
Honest review ( from an old K-drama lover with a freaking 5 years hiatus): this drama brought me back to K-Drama…
She clearly had genuine feelings for him, shown in the way she never pushed back against his affection and often looked at him with a sense of questioning. Her initial hesitation likely stemmed from the king’s own words that he would never see her as a woman. On top of that, her role as a cook left her with little time for herself, during the competition, when her attention shifted toward him her thoughts were still pulled back to how she could secure the win.
Some viewers seem to be missing the intent of the story because their expectations were set differently. His harsh reputation came from how his mother’s death changed him and the way he treated others, not because he was simply a tyrant. If this were meant to be only a romance, it would have started earlier, but instead the director chose to build their chemistry slowly. The leads spent time together, gained trust, and developed an understanding before entering a relationship, which makes the progression feel natural.
The show has always been centered on cooking, his feelings for the female lead came at the right moment and weren’t rushed. What does feel somewhat rushed is the villain’s storyline, since parts of it are still incomplete In the end, this drama set up different expectation those looking for heavy politics may be disappointed because that’s only a subplot, while the romance and main theme were handled with clear intention.
I personally started this drama without watching the trailer or following any press it was the comments here that…
my point is the main focus isn’t the romance unlike in many time travel dramas, she hasn’t fully moved on from the present. This makes it clear that she still needs to see the king’s effort why he cares for her and wants to be with her.
I feel that this comment section has been very dismissive of people who expected romance from this drama. I am…
I personally started this drama without watching the trailer or following any press it was the comments here that convinced me to try it, and I ended up liking it. The full reason she traveled back in time hasn’t been revealed yet, and the original book was written with food as the central theme, that’s what he saw in her and why he longed for her . The female lead has also made it clear several times that she wants to return to the future, which shows that romance isn’t meant to be the central focus.
The comment section exists for everyone to share their thoughts. Just as some viewers want more romance, others are fine with the way it is, both sides are simply sharing opinions. The creators of the show know what they’re doing if the intention was to make it romance-focused, that storyline would have been established much earlier, since it’s only a 12 episode drama.
