He is so calm. I guess the real He Xian is also like that in real life. That's why he managed to achieve many…
They actually look alike too! 😂 I remember reading that his family also said He Xian and Ren Jialun have some similarities in their appearance and mannerisms. Maybe that’s one of the reasons Ren Jialun was able to make him feel so natural and believable. He Xian has such a calm and composed presence, but you can still feel the strength underneath.

I wish all dramas are written amazingly like this. The story is compelling and full of lovely characters.
Right! This kind of drama is usually not my cup of tea, but the story is so gripping that I got completely hooked. The writing is really what makes it stand out, and the characters are so well-written and lovable. I wish more dramas were written like this too!

My only RJL drama is iQIYI’s SILENT TIDES (2025) which I thoroughly enjoyed so it will be interesting to see…
That’s another masterpiece with almost no shortcomings. It’s a star-studded drama, from the supporting cast to the leads.

The last Ren Jialun modern drama that gave me the same positive viewing experience and left me with a similar opinion as Abyss was Silent Tides.

good to see Ren in a normal series without all the heavy makeup 😆 have never actually watched any of his series.…
The Demon Hunter’s Romance is a great costume drama. The makeup is kept minimal. You can actually see the actors’ natural facial lines, moles, and skin texture. Silent Tides is another masterpiece of Allen. - a revolutionary drama

You got it right! It’s much easier to show emotions openly—like smiling, crying, or laughing—than to convey them subtly while keeping them restrained.

Every actor in this drama, especially the leads, did a great job. But I especially want to commend Ren Jialun, because I’ve seen a few people say he wasn’t suited for this role or that his acting is “formulaic.”

For me, Li Cheng is a really good match for him. He has many of the qualities I associate with Ren Jialun—bright, energetic, smart, passionate, and principled. Ren played him with a nice balance of warmth and determination, and he fit naturally alongside the more experienced officers.

I’ve watched many of Ren Jialun’s dramas, and I’ve never had trouble telling his characters apart. He gives each one a different feel instead of making them all seem like the same person. I’ve seen actors whose characters start blending together because they rely on the same mannerisms and expressions, but I don’t get that feeling with him.

His approach to Li Cheng was natural and understated, and those little expressions that are uniquely his only made the character more charming to me. He still has room to grow, of course, but I definitely wouldn’t call his acting “formulaic.”
