forgettable but re watchable
There were a few things that I didn't like but over all, I really liked the concept & I enjoyed it. I would probably rewatch it again, (after a year). The guy seemed a bit old for the girl but once you get over that it's fun. Male lead is attractive, but seems so much older that it doesn't settle too well, so it take awhile to warm up to the leads being a couple
Lots of bickering. Rehashing plot points. Overall not that pleasant
I watched this in 2023 . There were some tropes that were kind of standard for when it was released but over all it has aged well. I am not a fan of romance between bickering people & this was very heavy with that. Yoon Eun Hye is not my fav female lead but she did a good job here though her character was unbelievably naïve for having lived in a city her whole life and they had her prancing about the vineyard in ridiculous clothes & jewelry. Male lead Oh Man Seok was a bit too rusticated & I kept waiting for a transformation (in terms of hair style) but it never happened. It was annoying that they writers covered certain topics multiple times when they had already been resolved. The production quality, the very simple OST & the acting were all very good, but the way the characters were written was not pleasant entertainment for me
Didn't appeal to me, very odd kind of comedy
Odd. a comedy for certain tastes, but not mine. Clever premise, but idiotic. I really don't want to waste energy or time commenting on something that really wasn't worth my time. mindless entertainment had good production quality and the cast must have worked hard, but trying to come up with enough words to describe this is very very hard
Tedious amount of quickly resolved tropes & happy endings. But leads: meh
Short review : The lead female's character is incredibly irritating & U hate the way they have written her. She's a slob unless she's dating & even then they put her in some unappealing outfits. Once she stops being super annoying, the series is better, but then they throw in SO many tropes ! It's mostly a tease though because the parents give in rather easily, the misunderstandings are met pretty much head on & resolved quickly, but just the fact that they threw in a bunch of tropes is tedious. This series was a dud for me because of the lead female character.Long review:
I was going to pass this series up but then gave it a try. I do not like the female lead and the character she plays so I disliked the first 7 episodes. With episode 8 [with the help of a classy outfit for the female lead AND a very swoon worthy kiss] it seemed like the tone of the series was heading in a different direction & finally getting worth watching ,but that happy hope only lasted briefly. By episode 10, I was back to disliking it because they had started to make the male lead act idiotic & mean. a pleasant side character declared that love was nice but playing around was better & the female lead suddenly takes a bath & stops wearing sweats-getting her girly side on when she starts crushing on a guy. Why did I think this would be fun ? I persevered to ep.30 & was just so happy to be done when all seems all wrapped up & we have happy endings for 2 couples. I saw that the last 2 episodes had the cast split up by gender with the men all having trouble understanding thier women & honestly I was happy & done with this series, dunno why they had to spoil it but I was not going to watch those episodes & ruin the few warm fuzzies that I had already.
Martyrdom masked as Self sacrifice. Frenetic pace but boring surgeries
Needed something different after a 30 ep. Chinese Historical drama- & figured that I would just watch the 1st episode. I'm not a fan of medical dramas (though did love Ghost Dr. & Hospital playlist-just not the surgery bits. Also slogged through & Dr. Romantic-which had a much more endearing & charismatic lead Dr than this drama does).I rated this lower because :
1)it was fast paced but frenetic & not exhilarating.
2)The lead Dr. was not given enough time for character development
3) the closeups of surgery was boring (no need for most of it as it just makes things draggy-but then , this is not a fav genre.
The trauma team's dedication is touching, but them being heroes (pretty much against thier will!) did not resonate with me. Self sacrifice is fine, but not when it feels like a death wish martyrdom thing as they live a zombie like life disregarding their own basic needs . I think I've gotten to the certain age where self abuse isn't as noble so all I can think about is : "ah, you haven't eaten or slept today ?!") Also it's hard to ignore the issues of healthcare reality in S. Korean this past year, so it's really unfair to any real hospital trauma personnel to say these characters are heroes, I mean, yes, but they set the bar of care at a fairytale level! O.K. it is JUST a drama, but again the pace they go at is unsustainable for even one week if that & it is a group of people who have no life, just service.
The tension of the medical missions was less stressful for me than the welfare of the main characters! The surgery scenes were standard. Lots of blood gushing, spurting-but to me just boring. Have the doctors comes up with great work arounds, but really the implementation can be left to the imagination! The cast "gelled" a little too quickly , forming thier little rag tag rebel unit, but it was a nice short drama series with an ending that wasn't traumatic. From the trailer I was really expecting this to be about the male lead coming in, not finding the hospital environment hospitable, grabbing the best ER personnel , going rogue & setting up his own trauma center....why does my expectation sound better than the actual drama !!?
Good cast, but tired of seeing Kim Won-hae in yet another bad guy, role with him having tantrums. The trope of angry out of control, yelling screaming big boss needs to be retired. (or is this a reality in South Korea ?)
In the end: entertaining but nothing stellar .
Unconvincing
I like the cast but the evil prosecutor got too much screen time. some things were over the top : when you hit someone with a 2x4 board, full force, on the shins- repeatedly, legs will get broken, so walking away from that gets less interesting for me. When the whole reason for revenge is to avenge your father, who died because he did crooked things for crooked people, it's hard to feel all in sympathy/empathy. I didn't feel like they did a good job showing how lead con man convinced others to be on his side.
Casting, poorly written characters & heavy handed comedy ruin it
I wanted to like this but here was so much I just didn't like. Last things first; There is a 2 year time skip near the end with an unexplained miracle cure & a complete 180 of the male lead's personality. Then there is a bland ending where the main couple just hug. That's because they've already had an excessive amount of kissing beforehand, some of which created warm fuzzies, ( but they just kept at it & the spark just fizzled out. ) Then there is the matter of the casting. Yoon Kyun Sang was miscast. He is 6'4 and towered above his 5' costar. side views of him look like he is ominously lurking above her like a vulture! He was portraying a character whose medical condition would lend itself towards being on the slim side, but Yoon Kyun Sang is more lumberingly large. next problem I had was with the writing. Yoon Kyun Sang's character was written such that he was buffoonish with over the top comedic expressions & was repelling, not funny. He also spent the entire series being needy, with either a blank face or a hopeful desperate look, both of which were unendearing. Meanwhile, Kim Yoo Jung was perfectly cast & very appealing but was written to be too simple & incapable. It made it hard to be sympathetic to her. Her brother was also written badly & was a very flat unlikeable character. over all I'd say that it was poor writing or directing/interpretation of the character that was at fault. The real problem for this series is that there is a better rendition out there.NO, the real problem is that I watched the Chinese version (Touch Your Heart) before watching this & it was much much better. & randomly : Jasper Liu, the lead in the Chinese version (Touch Your Heart) looks like Song Jeu Rim's twin bother ! Clean with a passion for now was cringy & I couldn't wait to get done with it. Touch your heart I will definitely rewatch
Masochist male lead's visuals don't counter balance female lead character's caustic personality.
The male lead is So very attractive, & yet the female lead is SO very unpleasant. I t's absurd that the male lead falls for her. She has a sad back story but mistreats everyone, never evolving into anything remotely kind or nice. I found myself actually not want the leads to have a love connection. It says alot about how repulsive I find the female lead when rather than watch this, I find myself browsing for dramas that aren't even the genres I like ! The female lead's BFF is hyper focused on intimate things & everything that comes out of her mouth is crude. The humor falls flat and the warm fuzzies get trampled on . I want to like this & I tried, but I think, at 9 episodes I can honestly say that I've given it enough time to win me over.Whatever is endearing about this is just vapor -exhale & it's gone.
Tediously Waay too long- Side stories were just annoying filler
Are you here for the male lead ? well, skip my review & just watch it !For everyone else I'll be brief :
It's way too long. The second lead's relationship was irritating & took up too much screen time. Female lead was embarrassingly baby cutesy most the time. Side stories & family scenes were just annoying interruptions. Male lead is the only reason to watch & his character was not boyfriend material. Fluffy oversized dog had gross brown stained fur around it's face, like it needed washing. no weddings shown but abrupt happy endings for all 4 leads (AND 2 year time skip at end) Too much tediousness to really enjoy this series.
starts out riveting but leads have no chemistry. Violence & traumatizing deaths
I felt like this drama was was written very badly. Here's a list of things that made this rather "meh"
1) The Female lead every so often would suddenly start to act really cringy presenting the girly side of her character & it was not only embarrassing but unbelievable.
2) Lead Male was presented as bad boy/womanizer but you never see anything to back it up.
3) American soldier being named Colonel Sanders -seriously !? It's a well known persona who represents an American chicken franchise !
The started out riveting but
4) the leads had no romantic chemistry
5) The bad guys were too scary.
6) The death scenes were traumatizing.
7)A beloved character dies later in the series & though it's handled well, it was too much.
8) Things are winding down [with the bad guys] Then, they bring them back for another round trouble. UGH! So much tension.
By episode 18 It was tedious & I was really, really tired of it .
9) I was disappointed with the writing of the female lead that was so tough and capable in the first part of the series but who was easily overwhelmed in the 2nd part. She had so many skills and training but a bullet wound to the arm just takes her out...really ?!
10) There was so much of the series that was violent & unpleasant
I liked the leads but they had zero chemistry and the romance was written badly.
Random notes:
Though it is never shown - a couple sleep together which ends up being important, but it caught me by surprise [could they not have mentioned it!?]
Weirdly, the queen mother wore the same earrings in every single shot & they were really plain and cheap looking.
a brief happy ending and then a 4 year time skip! {death to time skips !!!}
Quickly resolved tropes, but male lead seems like he's the only one in love
Well let's start with the good : The plot does a good job of keeping you guessing through out.Kim Jae wook does an especially good job in this series, but Unfortunately, he seems to be the only one projecting any heart signals . He's projecting & smoldering but the female lead just seems perpetually bemused . While there are some steamy kisses, the female lead seems like she has "checked out". The male lead is vulnerable and requires a ridiculous number of hugs, but the female lead ,whether scripted or directed that way, is just a bit too prosaic to sell that she's head over heels in love. The imbalance was disappointing.
What keeps me from loving this ?
Firstly, I am not big on revenge plots. Secondly, Hate to love relationships with yelling & hitting don't equate to romance for me and so give me zero warm fuzzies. And while everyone's loose ends are tidied up, I prefer that the side characters don't encroach on the Main lead's storyline too much. I do love a good happy ending, but somehow an all inclusive happy ending sidetracks you from the main couple. putting a damper on the whole thing.
slow burn turns into a freezer burn
slow burn turns into a freezer burn around ep 10 as it started getting boring. The story seemd to just stall. "a slice of life" and " first crush" are accurate themes but "bland" should be added to the description. "sweet" is nice, but every character seems overly sensitive. I've seen a few anime series, [which also had slow paces] & enjoyed them, but in general, anime is not all that interesting to me . when I started drifting off at the beginning of ep. 10, I knew it was probably time to find something else. To finish or not to finish ? I probably will next time I need something soporific before bedtime.
Dropped at episode 6 because female lead is dead weight to the drama
I got to episode 6 & was totally done with the female lead. her "problem" is not her biggest handicap, her personality & insecurity is. I cannot stand a female lead who pushes men away because they are afraid. Especially when the male lead has given them no reason. Add to that it's an older woman younger man with the ridiculous trope of the man being attracted to a grumpy women. They must be brain damaged or had an abusive mother if they think a combative brash talking woman is "cute" & having a hard shell means she's soft on the inside. Male lead will be dealing with this abrasive insecure woman his whole life & has no one but himself to blame.
Disappointing & miscast. Even Doh Kyung Soo's visuals can't save it
Initially, even though it has Doh Kyung Soo in it, I was not interested, because another reviewer said : " the final scene hints at Happily Ever After but falls short of satisfying with the final scene leaving you wanting more + There were a couple of unresolved plot arcs and character threads"I relented to watching when I couldn't find anything that seemed better. After all, it Does have Doh Kyung Soo in it !
As of ep 5, D.O. had yet to impress me with anything other than the action sequences . His stoicism- (yeah, he's got amnesia), but still, it lasts too long & his dead pan expression does not improve upon by being so frequent. And here lies the main problem; this is not the right drama for D.O. Also, the female lead feels miscast & her character written badly. Between the 2 of them, I did not like nor was I interested in either one of them. For some reason, the romance between them was uninteresting as well. The second male lead meshed better as an actor & as a character with the female lead & her character. A big problem being that Kim Seon HO oozes charisma & emotes well, while, D.O. 's talents & charm are better suited to a different part than what he played here.
I wanted to love it, but I felt it was too much dependent on & geared toward long close of ups of D.O's lovely face while he was dead pan/stoic .
Guys liking Guys
I'm guessing that the title is telling us that this about guys liking guys , something that I did not pick up on because English is my first language. I quickly discovered that this is really skirting the homosexual issue by having a person imagine homosexuality where it isn't & finding it cute. By the end of the series I guess they assume that if you are still watching the series that you will be able to accept the homosexual relationship that is revealed. This was what I would choose to watch-not my kind of entertainment.
