A nice feel good escapism movie that's at the top of my re watch list
Since it's a movie, it's hard to say much about it without giving anything important away. I've re watched this a few times already & will probably re watch it every 2 years or so. I gave it a 10, which is very rare for me. [I think I've only given that score out 3 or 4 times!]I like the setting. The sunny beach vibe sets the tone. The story is not complicated or melodramtic. The leads are good. The ending is good. I'm sorry for the generic comments, but I really liked it & more information would just spoil it for you. Normally I love to give out spoilers, but this is a breezy light feel good movie that deals wit a difficult issue, but doesn't deep dive.
A rather "miracle" idealistic, rather than realistic story of restoration to public opinion
The main character is bossy & rude.As you learn more about her you see her good qualities, but it's no excuse for her overbearing attitude. She & lead guy are equally arrogant but when tested their good qualities shine through. The lesser character's stories create a sober atmosphere . In the end, motives are revealed & status is restored. So this is a rather "miracle" idealistic, rather than realistic story. non Asians ; need to be familiar with just how powerful public opinion & sentiment is to understand & appreciate just how miraculous it is for a k-pop idol ,or famous person in S.Korea, to be restored to good public opinion & career once they have been tarnished by scandal , ostracized & shunned .
Breezy light romantic drama.Stunning Game graphics
The most unique Chinese-drama I've watched because it has none of the typical "tropes" & only a minuscule amount of drama. Basically a breezy light romantic drama. Parts of the story take place in a computer game & the graphics are stunning. The things that keeps this from a perfect score :
The actual ending part where the story comes full circle was nice, but the stuff they throw in before it kinda sucked the impact out of the ending
I would Stop at Ep 29
[when they are on the hill in the computer generated scene]
before; "2 years later" because the rest of the episode & # 30 have boring & unnecessary details about the roommates side stories (the plots alluding to 2 guys being gay, Wei-Wei's roommate's relationship with the jerk who caused so much trouble for Wei-Wei) ,& really, too much information on the main couple's finalizing their relationship.
----------------------------------------------
Note: when watching on Netflix I recommend ending the series at Ep 29 time stamp 30:11
Silly, but decent entertainment is enjoyable even though there are some plot holes
Forgettable, but not a waste of time. This is one of the better web drama series that I've seen. The story, acting and quality are all pretty good. There are some plot holes, and I do think that this could have benefited from one or 2 more episodes [so that those holes were filled in] but overall it's enjoyable and has a decent ending [if a bit silly]. I'd probably watch this again someday & in that light, forgettable is not necessarily a bad thing sometimes .
Constant Dirty language +"frank" discussions .Romance doesn't work.-meh- happy ending
I keep wanting to see Lee Seung Gi in great roles, but so far I have yet to see him in a drama that is better than My girlfriend is a 9 tailed fox .He plays nice push over who crushes on a harsh overbearing potty mouthed celebrity childhood friend (who has a married boyfriend). You're set up to believe they both fail at love because they are meant to be together. He cooks, cleans, picks her up when she's drunk. It was not great because it really came across that he might like being used/abused . When he puts his feelings forward & she has had her eyes opened to how great a guy he is - her whole personality changes (Wasn't the whole point that nice guy loved her just the way she was ?)
Constant Dirty language & the "frank" discussions make it too uncomfortable to be a romance. Kissless-meh- happy ending
The whole drama is cuteness flushed down the toilet
Immortals should stick to dating other immortals -does anyone really need to have it explained why ? But the heart wants what the heart wants regardless of the consequences. Would you it matter & would your affection be redirected if you knew more about the parts of your life that you were unaware of ?I recommend that you pass on this, but it you aren't convinced with my warning, then read the heavy spoiler - this is not the drama you think it is.
***Spoiler ****
There is a happy ending BUT if you watch past the 1st ending you find out that the immortal guy crushing on her is the one who made her immortal in the 1st place in order to save her life (though for some reason she does not remember it & does not recognize him) He has been in love with her from the beginning & says that every other man she cares about will die, but he will always be there for her whenever she is ready for an everlasting love (aw ! but it ruins the 1st ending alot, so the whole series cuteness is flushed down the toilet!)
Mostly light hearted drama without an abundance melodrama but Rushed ending
I do really love this drama & I thought the Lead actors are great. I liked that it was a mostly light hearted drama without an abundance melodrama (it was nice that the crying & wailing were minimal.)There are a fair amount of obstacles thrown in the path of love, they are mostly dumb obstacles .It was a bit sad that the female lead was made to look so dowdy & was not dressed or styled attractively, but they do make a point that the male lead does not fall for her because of her looks. .
I didn't give this a perfect score because :
1) Female lead's BFF was annoying & dirty minded
2) The athletic director was more grating than funny.
3) It got a bit too cutesy about 1/2 way through.
4) 3/4 of the way through they teased a possible love triangle with a gay character which was oddly timed & placed.
5) the way the end was handled
6) music was super annoying because they just didn't have much variety but played the same songs over & over.
5 different romances were resolved in the course of the drama but the satisfaction is dulled by the amount of time it takes to get to the end. AND, the happy ending comes in a rush [in the last 5 minutes] for the couple you care about the most.
Amazon has 22 episodes, but Net Flix has 36 episodes so not sure what that's all about but 36 episodes was really too much & dulls your enthusiasm as you slog through the insipid scenes with the "relief" humor which is neither a relief or funny.
The large age gap and dirty humor made it difficult to like
There was some dirty humor in the beginning that put me off the characters . I also didn't find Andy Lau incredibly appealing. The 15 year age gap between he & Shu Qui was quite obvious. I was further disenchanted to find that Lau's character was a 3 time divorcee. If this had been a series I would have dropped it. It did have a nice ending but it wasn't completely clear how the one couple was going to really resolve their issues.
Just Turn off your brain & enjoy
This bite size web drama with 4 episodes [each 14-23 min each] is ashort & sweet drama with surprisingly Good music, good acting, good production quality. The story is just the right length too. Some plot points are very silly, [ like; does a guy have macho insecurity issues that cause him to take risks to get the attention of a girl who already has got her eye on him ? ] The story seems to be reaching a bit for conflict because, well there NEEDS to be conflict & drama ! Don't over think it just turn off your brain & enjoy the ride. I will probably re watch this for a quick k-drama fix
Tedious & genre waffling . Tries to sell a red flag romance
As other reviewers said spot on: "is it a comedy or a mystery/slasher film ? " Well, either way, it fails at either of those genres. It's incredibly Tedious. The main character is SO very shallow & unlikable. Actually, all but one character is shallow & unlikable ! I'm kind of sick of plots with shallow annoying women who are rude & abusive to the guys who like them. To me that's a red flag woman, not a person who has potential to be in a romantic relationship
Male lead's personal drama & the scary virus plot put me off ( in 2020)
This was a bit of a fail for me as I watched it in June 2020,during the pandemic & the over arching story of the series was about a horrific killer virus being unleashed. Ugh! Too timely ! At any other time it would feel like fiction. I was a fan of the American series. This one was significantly different & had a distinct K- drama flair to it. I liked the characters &I liked the actors. I did not like that they spent more than 1 episode on the Male lead's son's health. I get why they did it , but it was too much emotion for me. The male lead came off as a bit of a jerk because he was pretty distant from his wife during & after the son's health issue.
The format of this was different in that it started a new story a bit before the end of each episode. The end of the series was happy but they left a little cliff hanger in case they decide to make a second season. Without the male lead's personal drama & the scary virus plot, I might actually find a second season more interesting !
NO romance but an office, overcoming adversity story
Although it is weakly teased, this does not have any romance in it, which is good because the leads have zero chemistry. If you get to episode 4 and find
1) the Female lead grating & irritating
2) the Male lead robotic & dull as dirt
3) no sparks between them
well then that's your cue to drop the series.
I wish I had, but I kept hoping for some magic to happen.
The characters never grow on you. If anything, this is an office, overcoming adversity story with everything else falling very flat. A real waste of time which I blame on the writers & the director. If you DO make it to the end, be prepared for the one kiss of the series to be creepy, as the Male lead suddenly becomes a viper striking the Female lead's lips with an unexpected & predatory like swiftness that is anything BUT romantic. (he finishes it off well, but, wow, the initial execution is really off putting !)
Falls flat. Main character can't understand thier own emotions
I should have taken the advice of a reviewer who said : "one of the leads leaves the country for an indeterminate period of time after saying "have a good life". they eventually come back but do not seek out the person they supposedly loved. The One left behind patiently waits and then seeks them out. They share a look and that's all you get- a short, abrupt, no physical contact ending that implies they will get back together. There was so much that fell flat with this. It's not worth the words to explain. Lackluster and can you really get over the lies, or the implied lies OR the inability to understand your own emotions ?
Insipid self sacrificing female is not worthy of a story
Choi Si-won is adorable as usual, but I found the self sacrificing maiden to be insipid. It is presented as noble to help instigate trickery & deception to achieve marriage of your rival to your heart's desire ? Helping someone else deceive the object of affection just shows me that her affection must not run that deep as human Love is self serving and tenacious . Female lead is aggravatingly wishy washy-yes she will wait for him & even sleep with him, but when pressed by her mistress, she will also marry another (without telling HIM she slept with another guy!) AND she will take the place of her frenemy to spare that girl from being 'taken' by a guy whose taken a fancy to her. How is the female lead any kind of paragon for anything !?
No lead romance but Alot of yelling. Unclear synopsis.
This is a hard drama to review. While it is somewhat diverting, it doesn't have characters that you really invest interest in. I don't like humor that yells at you & this has alot of yelling. There is NO romance for the leads, though there is a slight hint that there could be, but nothing ever develops in ANY way.The rapid dialogue makes it hard to really grasp everything that's going on [especially if you need to read the subtitles]. The stories of the clients were more interesting than the main cast. Near the end, the big reveal was completely confusing (Business terms ? bad subtitles ? unclear cultural references? ) Either way, it needed a clear synopsis from one of the characters & that never happened. For the most part, I enjoyed this & the actors were all attractive & did a great job, but it would have been better if they had less yelling & they had even slightly developed a tiny bit of romance between the Female lead & the 2nd Male lead. I was hoping & waiting for them to reveal that the Male lead just pretended to be "over the top" but that never happened.
