I watched the whole show and I don't think he's self righteous and hypocritical like you said, it seems that whatever he did is justifiable and reasonable. He's not a saint you see. If he doesnt use his power to stand up for those who are poorly mistreated, and punishes those who do wrong then who will? Also he's only giving them a taste of what they did to others so that they can realised their wrongdoings but he do not actually fire them.
