i feel that its more like she didn't let the harem and its problems change her or her outlook on the world. she mentions how she was powerless and seongnam was taken from her while she could do absolutely nothing about it. it also shows that how her position is guaranteed for now but might be overtaken by consort hwan any moment because she has dowager backing her up.
the main thing her that is unconventional is that unlike most saeguks, the queen isnt doing this out of self preservation. She'd rather die if it means that she can secure the life of her children and this is something ive been dying to see in a drama. the REAL motherly love that must have existed in queens at some point.
The king does not care for the queen, the only reason the he made her queen was to keep power in check. The queen also does not care for him. Infact its quite obvious that she looks down on him at times when she mentions how he is an illegitimate child and the dowager was never queen.
I also believe that the dowager isnt doing this simply because of her son but also because she cannot fathom the thought of someone looking down on her so she wants the empress deposed and consort hwan to take her place, like she did in her time. She also has the threat of the minister looming on her who might sell her out of his daughter doesnt become the empress.
theyve overlooked the fact that the queen brought up these children herself, if one was outstanding does not mean the others are not are may never be. the same nuturing was done for all of them and that is why none of them desire the throne from their sick brother. also shows how there are consorts on the queen's side vs the consort's side and even their kids are aware of how the queen may look powerless but is not and how it may look like the grand princes are useless but they are not.
