My favorite Korean film of all time is Old Boy, one of the "edgiest" Kfilms out there. No, I don't hate on Netflix…
No no, I don't think this drama is shit. For example, I loved some of the visuals, the weird shots, and editing. But I didn't think it was spectacular either especially the writing.
Exactly, 8 is decent. A 4/5 😂. I don't understand why people think that this deserves a score a lot higher than that.

I agree with you about that as well, which is why I think the lower score is justified because determining leniency based on someone's experience is a personal preference.

First, I never claimed thrillers didn't receive discrimination on this site. I said among other thrillers, the scores are often fair. Second, "Handmaiden" never sat at 8.6, it hovered around 8.4/8.5 right after its Cannes release, then dwindled down to 8.3/8.2 over the years after mainstream audience got a hold of it. A .1 or .2 score discrepancy is hardly a clear bias. Again, I have acknowledged that slight biases might exist genre to genre, but biases won't drastically lower a score by an entire score of 1.0 as some of y'all would like to believe. Lastly, "Handmaiden" is still one of the highest rated psychological thriller movie on this site. The rating system isn't perfect, but it's a lot more accurate than the narrative you guys love to exaggerate, claiming dramas and movies are scored low only because of nudity or taboo subjects. Clearly, you're a noobie relying on stereotypes about Kfilms if you believe that. Explicit Kfilms have been around for decades, and the screenplays that are good, though not perfectly sometimes, will be well received even if it may not be tolerated by many people.

100% agree with everything you've said. You can change the films to the well received Netflix dramas on this site like Under the Queen's Umbrella, Signal, Navillera, Stranger, Beyond Evil, The Glory, and Kingdom and I think my point will stand.

oops, my bad! I thought you were talking about Old Boy🤭. Even then, there are plenty of webtoon based dramas that were good like Strangers from Hell and DP. I don't think the difference in quality between them and this is the nudity or edginess either.

Omg I love your watchlist!!! I think you'll enjoy the movies I've recommended because our taste is very similar. You are missing some masterpiece thrillers from the 2000s-2010s though and don't miss out on the gangster movies too.

I am responding to "everyone loves hating on netflix kdramas because they’re more edgy & whatever." This is not true. Thrillers may be rated more harshly than other genres on this site, but that doesn't mean 8.0s are all of a sudden 8.5 & 9.0s compared to other thrillers. They often have other problems beside the edgy stuff.

Old Boy is based off a manga and the manga didn't become famous until the film became popular. The film has standing on its own. Same with Park Chan Wook's Handmaiden, which is a lot more sexually graphic than this drama. If the screenplay is good enough, people will enjoy it regardless of whether there is nudity or not.

They're the best! You should also watch The Chaser, Blind, and The Wailing if you haven't already. Those are also really good.

It's hilarious to me when MDL noobies think these dramas are graphic when films like I Saw the Devil or Old Boy exists 😂😂 and are well received relative to other movies here.

No, I don't hate on Netflix dramas because of edginess but because the quality of the screenplays have dipped.

Honestly, who are these people giving low ratings to the show just because of nudity? I stumbled upon a single negative review that seemed to obsess over it, while the majority either mentioned it in passing or, more importantly, pointed out the glaring issues with the drama's narrative and screenplay. This isn't the first either. Over at "The Bequeathed" comment section, the same crowd seems to think the low rating is due to the incest theme or some other drivel.

Seriously, enough with these strawman arguments. It's getting on my nerves. As a fan of psychological thrillers, I found both dramas to be nothing more than average. Just because a drama throws in some edgy themes or grotesque visuals doesn't automatically make it a top-tier thriller. A genuinely good thriller should have a captivating, intricate narrative, consistency, complex characters, and unpredictability. It shouldn't have to rely on controversial themes or shock value as a cheap fallback for lack of depth. Can we please focus on that?

This is the only site where the lies are upvoted more than the truth.

For those of you who understand or have friends who understand Korean, here is the video that @kokoro2 is probably referring to.
Search this up on YouTube: [충격영상] 오빠 나랑 술 마시고 마약 (이선균 - 김남희 풀녹취).
The arrogance of ignorant international fans spewing lies and constructing fiction to understand the problems of Korea is just pathetic.

The lack of critical thinking on this thread is mind boggling.
The usage of "overhyped" or "overrated" are appropriate when considering the context of EAW in most databases. This drama is rated 9.1 (was 9.2) in MDL and a 9.1 in Imdb. This means that this show is quite literally in the top .01 or .001% of all shows. Have a favorite film in mind? Chances are EAW tops it in terms of the rating. So, yes, with all the mistakes and shortcomings that the show had, it still received a nearly perfect rating in most people's reviews, making the show "overrated" or "overhyped." It is a good drama, don't get me wrong, but it also so far from perfect.

At the very least, if you are going to argue that someone who thinks the show is overrated is a hater, challenge the actual substantial criticisms of the show and make compelling arguments of why the show DESERVES its nearly perfect score... We, the so called "haters," have done our due dillegence to show why it's undeserving of a perfect or nearly perfect score. Therefore, rather than calling people "haters," if you believe the show is deserving of its rating, do your due dillegence to explain why you think the show is deserving..

Yeah, I suspected you were trying to paint the people criticizing the show into some petty fangirls obsessed with Jun ho, and only hating on the show because he didn't get enough screen time. Turns out I'm right based on your response. That's also why I also included the sentence starting with, "I'm sorry to burst your little bubble..." The point isn't that Jun Ho should have had more screen time; the point is that all the characters lacked substance, except to support Young Woo. They all could have been lifeless puppets and I wouldn't know the difference.

Just because a story is told from a lead's perspective or even if it is the autobiography of the main character doesn't mean the side characters shouldn't be developed. Nor should the writing be excused from criticisms for having under developed characters...
I'm also sorry to burst your little bubble, but the critique that the show could have used better developed and more complex characters applies to every single character in the show except Young Woo, not just Joon Ho.
