I have read in comment section or somewhere else. Initial script was around 36 episodes. More episodes more ad more revenue. that's why most of the cdrama water-filler.

Initial script had less episodes but producer asked to increase it. that's why second half is messy and we get a good villain (Jiang Wu) turned into comic relief and lovesick boy.
