I think among all the SLS arcs I’ve seen, HJP’s is the most excruciating.
Chung Myung (Hotel del Luna) - although his story was also tragic, but FL had a reason to hate him, albeit being a huge mistake/misunderstanding.
Jung-Hwan (Reply 1988) - before HJP, there was our boy, Jung-Hwan. The right boy at the wrong time.
I mean, all SLS stories are sad, but I think what sets Jipyeong’s apart from the rest is that he didn’t do anything wrong to deserve all the heartbreak he has gotten. He was at the right place & time, he hit the ball, he played fair, he deserved the best.
If only he was an unlikable, less charismatic, and a cheating bastard... but he wasn’t. There was nothing not to like.
The problem with this show is that Dalmi is not seeing what the audience is seeing. She’s unaware of what Jipyeong is doing behind the scenes, and is unaware of what he has done for her. Dalmi is unaware of Jipyeong’s background.
Meanwhile, Dalmi only sees the “good” side of Dosan, which he reserves ONLY FOR HER. But she’s unaware of his jealous steaks, his insecurities. So the audience is more sympathetic towards Jipyeong, but Dalmi is choosing Dosan because of what she sees. There’s a large disconnect, and the writers only have themselves to blame for this.
I think what saddens me more is that in the end, Dalmi chose Dosan. Jipyeong didn’t even “let go”. He just wasn’t the choice. And that’s sad because from a viewer’s perspective, the choice doesn’t make sense. And Jipyeong basically suffered through all this and gained nothing. What a sad, sad character arc.
Jipyeong is seen crying until the very last episode... Man, why can’t they give this guy a break? His back must be hurting from carrying the whole drama by himself.
Yes, I absolutely have a life, but the way this drama did him dirty is making me angry and poignant. It's awful.
This feels like a bad, very bad break-up :(
They did him dirty.
There is definitely chemistry between them; their elevator, chuseok scenes are more palpable than those kissing scenes with Dosan.
But more than that, I want Jipyeong to be happy.

He’ll always be the one that got away.

He acted a simple line like “This is enough” so painfully good it’s unforgettable.
His scenes are the funniest, most entertaining, and, sadly, the saddest.
I wish that he’ll always get the girl for all the dramas he’ll do from here on.
Hopefully, there’ll be another time skip showing Jipyeong going back to SK & meeting grandma again with, this time, his own little family.

Honestly, the loathing I feel for Dosan has now been overshadowed by the sorrow I have for Jipyeong.
His story is big heartbreak.
HJP looking at the money plant & box of letters and saying:
“It’s okay. This is enough.”
HJP to Dalmi:
“I am not okay.
I’m sorry, too. I’m afraid I’ll act like a loser for quite a while.”
Gosh, these two scenes had me bawling my eyes out. Too painful.
Lee Do Hyun carried this drama effortlessly.
