I scrolled down to read the comments, feeling that most people are being overly biased towards someone like they…
even as an unbiased watcher, what NDS is doing to SDM, especially from a career standpoint is terrible. I've written a post about this you can read above.
I would like to give a little analogy on the Sandbox in respect to how HJP and NDS treats SDM.
When a child goes to a playground and goes on the swing. They will want to swing higher, turn their body around while swinging, stand on the swing, close their eyes while swinging, and etc...
When she falls, the sandbox is there to cushion her fall, so that she knows that, in the future, closing my eyes is not a good decision, because I will fall. Oh, this one doesn't work either, because I will fall. So just like Artificial Intelligence, the child is learning each time she makes a mistake.
This is HJP being a Sandbox as the safety feature of the swing.
Imagine a swing that has a different safety feature. That instead of sand serving as a cushion, the swing set instead has a six point harness instead. The six point harness is great at first, because the chances the child will fall is greatly reduced. Some will even initially praise how advanced the new system is, how high tech.
But as you see, the child no longer has freedom. She can only move, and do things that are set by the 6 point harnesses parameters. And in the end, just becomes your standard computer, unable to learn from it's mistakes, or learn new things.
And when the six point harness eventually breaks, and it will, the fall will be much more harder, as there is nothing to cushion the fall. It may be so traumatic that the child decides to never get on the swing ever again.
This is NDS being a six point harness as the safety feature of the swing.
But as Start Up is showing us, the child prefer the high tech and new six point harness, than the dependable Sandbox...
Apologies for another long post. I just have to rant my frustrations...
It is known that Korea has a very patriarchal society, and I think, when the writers started writing this script, Korea haven't made the necessary steps to address this issue. In the past two years though, with the growing strength of #me too and the growing call for equal pay and gender diversity in the work force has never been stronger.
The negative feedback from both international, and domestic viewers is growing evidence that the writers missed the mark when it came to societal views on women in the workforce. There is a big disconnect between what people in power should look like, versus what the show feels people in power should look like.
From the business side, I can imagine this is where the hidden/subconscious negative feedback is stemming from.
A CEO is considered one of the highest, if not the highest position in any company. This is a distinction that the show addresses several times, showing us WIJ have absolute power in her company, and dropping several hints along the way showing the overall power of the CEO.
And yet...
Start Up shows us, that a CEO is a powerful position, but when a women holds it, it's no more powerful than the British monarchy. It's merely a symbolic position. It is a position easily assailable by men, only to be saved by men.
We know WIJ is a CEO of Injae company, and in Ep. 11, when we are finally seeing what a competent women in power looks like, NDS dad has to come in and cast doubt on her legitimacy, but at the same time prop up a man (NDS) as a more caring person.
Why is this? Why does NDS's dad attack a female CEO, and not the son, even after WIJ already told the dad that Injae Company and SST are working on the same tech? And here comes to head Korea's problem with women in the workplace.
In Korea, and even worse in Japan, men are preferred for higher positions simply due to the fact that men can't get pregnant, won't use family problems as an excuse, and are not seen as society as the ones to take care of children or household. This has made the glass ceiling for women to be increasingly resilient.
In fact, I find it quite irritating that the FEMALE CEO of SH Venture wants WIJ to show compassion for NDS dad, because if WIJ was a male CEO, this requirement would not be needed. It's no different when a woman becomes president or prime minster, they are expected right away to be warm, and cuddly, and should not be rude or disrespectful because she is a woman. If she comes off as businesslike, or strong willed, she is immediately derided as trying to be a man.
There is a similar disconnect when it comes to SDM. In fact the freshest example of this is Ep. 11. Note how when Alex leaves for the elevator, he shakes SDM hands first. Because she's the CEO. But once the deal has been reviewed, and she's found to be a 7% share holder of the company, it changes. In the second meeting, Alex shakes NDS hands first, because, SDM may be CEO by name, but NDS really has all the power.
Ever since they agreed to give the CEO only 7% shares, she will always be ineffective in the eyes of investors, just as HJP said.
It's incredibly frustrating that the writers missed the mark on this. We are seeing that most viewers don't have this archaic view of women in the workplace, especially at higher positions.
Why are women subconsciously rooting for HJP? Because it's one thing to have a partner for love, it's a completely different thing to have a partner for work and love. HJP represents a supportive work/love partner who knows how to let his love becomes empowered and resilient.
The writers perceive that women, want their work/love partner to treat them like NDS does to SDM. But on the contrary, women prefer how HJP treats SDM. Let us go further into this discussion.
How NDS treat SDM as a woman
1. SDM getting 7% of the company shares as the CEO is problematic because a CEO, as we see the scene with Alex, is suppose to be an important position. But as of now, her 7% makes her powerless to make any company decision, and does make investors lose respect to her. We see this in the handshake of Alex to NDS first in the second meeting. Also, she is most likely the only CEO in Sandbox to have such a high title, with no power.
If NDS really respected her, he would have insisted she have the bigger share, especially when his friends already told him, they were ok with SDM having the bigger share.
2. In Ep.11 WIJ had to answer a very tough question from the father of NDS. No one came to her rescue, and she in fact even rebuked an offer from her father to invest in the company, because she wanted to show, how powerful women in high positions can be.
In contrast, SDM was asked a question that was equally tough as WIJ's, but instead of giving her even a bit of self respect to actually do a CEO's job, her boyfriend comes to her rescue and bails her out.
3. Ever since the beginning, NDS has been coddling SDM. He has heralded every single one of her ideas, as genius. He has agreed with every single thing she says. He is the epitome of a yes man, and the romantic relationship between SDM and NDS while working together, effectively makes SDM less effective as a CEO because SDM never get's REAL experience of what a CEO is like, as she never faces actual problems in a company, like creative differences, labor disputes and etc...
In fact, NDS coddling even extends to his friends. NDS has always been taking care of his friends future, to the point that, the friends are never able to grow as engineers. It's no surprise that Alex did not want Cheul San and Yong San, even subtly laughing that NDS thinks that they are 2STO material. The fact of the matter, the other two sans, never realize their weaknesses and shortcomings because NDS has always made them feel bigger than they are, and better than they are. All this does is make them unprepared for a world where NDS isn't defending them. This same line of thinking applies heavily to SDM.
NDS has been forcefully brainwashing SDM on her importance to the company. As a way of giving her false confidence in fact. This is very detrimental to her growth as a CEO. With NDS always there to save her, the minute she has to be a CEO in another company, I have my doubts she will succeed, much less get the title of CEO, as she has not shown any signs of being competent.
Three times, SDM could have shown her strength as a person and CEO, and three times NDS has "saved" her unnecessarily. I highly doubt that the writer even sees this as an issue, as they are using this savior mode of NDS as romantic plot device. Unfortunately for the writers, the audience has tired of seeing the damsel in distress. It's one thing, when a rich Chaebol is saving a FL who works in McDonalds. It's a completely different thing when a CTO is saving the CEO FL who is suppose to be the big reason SST is succeeding.
As women, we want to know that when we end up in positions of power, whether CFO, CEO, Manager or etc... We want to feel the respect that comes with the title. We don't want people being nice to us, because they have romantic ulterior motives. We don't need someone "saving" us all the time. And most of all, we don't want to be discriminated against, just because we have lady parts, we don't want to have to be nice, or courteous, or soft-hearted, because we are women.
I would like to end with this quote...
"A man who say he loves a woman, but doesn't respect what she can do, does not understand what it means to love the woman"
But if you want to potentially get the largest SLS ever, then yes, it's very good.
The technology Noongil uses is AI, more specifically the way the machine recognizes things. That is why there is an emphasis on accuracy.
It doesn't matter if the app they created is Cheul San's idea of a camera alarm to deter crows. What investors are after is the accuracy rate.
As companies like Injae and SST keeps getting the accuracy higher, the more effective they can use the AI technology for other applications.
Once they get the accuracy of the technology as high as 99%, then, the next step will be self-driving cars.
So, you see, Noongil may not take away jobs, but the technology it is using will.
Not even a shoutout, the way it looks, you'd think SST invented Yong Shil...
AI in itself is a technology that cuts the need for labor forces as computers are able to learn.
How to prop up your ML? by making your FL useless.
Who is going to Sandbox for him?
Start Ups need people to invest in it.
The End.
