I feel that Day initiating the break up is him acknowledging Mhok's trauma, albeit to an extreme. This will help Mhok to grow into a better chef, for him to acknowledge that Rung's death was not his fault (just because he didn't pick up the phone) and for him to see himself less as a caretaker for Day, but as equals in a relationship. The break up will be a necessary catalyst for these!

I agree! I think everyone who hated it should rewatch and hear what the Mom said to Night about being worried about Mhok. I think it's so true, and this breakup will be a good catalyst for them both to work on themselves.
