the writer has had enough of suffered FL in chinese dramasđ€Ł this time let's make the ML sufferđ„Č
This us such a great point. A perfect example of FL misery and trauma as plot is âFlourished Peony.â Like, I LOVED the drama but at some point it got to be so ridiculous how she couldnât catch a momentâs peace and was constantly being abused, mistreated and down on her luck because of the plot. Glad that the ML is having to go through it; whatâs good for the goose is good for the gander.
SYM is such a stubborn, selfish, often unlikable and utterly imperfect FL but oh how I love her! Like, she just wants to SURVIVE, yâall.
And she cares about NH/LSL but making it out alive comes first for her (and rightly so).
In her defense, she was relying on the ML plot armor keeping NH/LSL safe and so her concern wouldnât have her making foolish decisions (like, say, refusing to leave the MLâs side while being completely outnumbered by the assassins chasing them).
How many times have we, as fans, not screamed at the screen when a FL is foolishly declaring that she refuses to leave the ML because if they âdie, [they] die togetherâ?! And we as audience are thinking how stupid that is because it distracts ML, forces them to have to be responsible for them both and decreases both their chances of survival?
Here, the ADWD screenwriter turns that trope on its head.
SYM, as frustrating as she has been, has truly been acting out of a will to live that supersedes all the drama tropes that would box her in and control her actions (with the exception of the iconic scenes, which sheâs not allowed to escape).
Hers has been the most accurate depiction of how a real life person would react and keep reacting if we needed to survive in a world where we knew we were predestined to die. Weâd say, eff romance, and do anything and everything to make it through another day alive.
Ok, I had to stop 7 minutes into Ep. 24 to say WTF?!! Like, Iâve been in SYM corner but homegirl literally STABBED him. Granted, she had shame enough to look mortified but she stabbed that man.
Like, how does the drama come back from that?
Now that I think about it, in another âlifetimeâ (I.e. OG script) he refused to save her and made her a living corpse so, we can say theyâre âevenâ? Sort of?
It was, but I think especially so because it was NH. If it had been SH, who has been presented as more of a rogue and free spirited kind of dude, I actually think he would have been somewhat amused and would have gotten a kick out of it (even though, yes, itâs totally morally wrong).
Ep. 23 preview: What a great way for SYM to finally find out that LSL is NH. Not looking forward to the emotional fallout but hopefully it gets the plot moving in terms of SYM having to decide if she trusts her knowledge of the 2D characters and plot as she knew them from the script or her own two eyes and lived experiences and overall her gut instinct that told her LSL was authentic and trustworthy before she knew his real identity.
More than anything, I think itâll be SYMâs embarrassment and hurt pride that will get in the way of forgiving LSL/NH quickly.
As a Hispanic who is used to watching plotlines that make my blood boil (Mexican telenovelas are WAYYY more frustrating), ep. 22 was less blood pressure raising for me than it was for others.
Iâm still enjoying the show but had to roll my eyes at how Nan Heng was blindsided by the incense.
Song Yitingâs shamelessness and willingness to ruin her reputation and drag LSL down with her was something else! Especially after how friends have practically been calling out her sister as a town hussy.
CGH, though. In the original script it may have been NH, influenced by his villainous uncle who was the villain of the story but the story may have shifted to CGH turning villain with his mentor general whispering in his ear.
Seeing some comments where some are spitting mad at SYM but judging by ep 19 and ep 20 preview sheâs finally starting to admit she was wrong about NH.
And OMG, ep. 19 with NHâs mother beaming like an anime character at SYM and NHâs supposed love! And then the transition to SYM putting on a cheesy performance that results in NH laughing and telling her to ânot act because [sheâs] terrible at it.â Lol.
Iâm still reeling from the electrifying, synergetic drum beating scene between SYM and NH.
I think the chemistry between these two is better than with LSL (although I do appreciate that it provides a way for SYM to experience NHâs softer side, without her realizing it).
And LOL at SYMâs brazenness and total disregard for the norms of the times in the Ep 15 preview.
Homegirl just hiked up that skirt without shame to apply the ointment on her knee right in front of NH. Like, I know she must have seen enough costume dramas in the real world to know how scandalous it would have been for her to pull such a move, in front if a prince no less!, is in those times. But she just doesnât care. Which goes to show that, underneath the surface, she has built a level of comfort with NH, even if she wonât admit it.
This show is definitely going on my re-watch list.
Wow, after watching episode 14, it looks like there was some sort of misunderstanding between CGH and NH due to someone intercepting the message sent by carrier pigeon during the battle where CGH was caught.
Itâs starting to look more and more like thereâs someone who has been sowing discord between NH and CGH.
Episode 14. Yep, getting really tired of the FL slagging off on the ML so hard. Can we please advance the plot…
I am loving this show but I can see where viewer would get annoyed and frustrated about all that you listed.
As I watch FLâs attitude towards NH I remember that in her mind, the main script (the one she read, which is the only one she knows) events, like her falling in love with NH, will lead to an inevitable ending of her being killed off. So it makes total sense that she is holding on to dear life to her bias and prejudices against NH because if she doesnât, it means death and, wore, being kept as a living corpse for her.
She is not privy to what we the audience are privy to but also, any variation of her giving NH the benefit of the doubt leads to her losing her losing her life so that helps me to cut her some slack.
I wonder how many more episodes I'm going to have to watch until the Song Yimeng realizes that Nan Heng is not…
Based on these recent two episodes, weâre getting close to seeing her realize that sheâs been wrong about NH.
Right now, sheâs still struggling with feelings of fear and contempt for NH (and with good reason since he judged and rejected her from the jump and tried to kill her multiple times) and empathy, compassion and understanding of NH.
NH made gains with Yimeng after the monologue he gave in the supply room about how in battle it was kill or be killed and in the palace it was having to face others who would sacrifice his life for power and control. Brava to Lin Yitong for her masterfully acting out Yimengâs conflict and disbelief at the possibility that she may have gotten NH all wrong.
That final point he made about how he was only willing to do anything to stay alive may have been what finally broke through Yimengâs pride and prejudice.
Because at the end of the day, Yimengâs been experiencing the exact same thing that NH was desperately describing.
As she told LSL on the rooftop, sheâs been so lonely and desperate to be understood and there was NH breaking down word for word her exact experiences and the struggle to stay alive in a world that doesnât get her (CGH doesnât get her, her father doesnât get her and her maids, while supportive, simply humor her without really understanding the gravity of her situation). It looks like Yimeng was also starting to realize that NH was just as misunderstood.
Lin Shiulin may be the part of NH that understands Yimengâs yearning to change things, but NH as royal is the part of NH that knows what itâs like to live the life in the present that sheâs so desperate to change.
I suspect Yimeng will come to love both without realizing that the path sheâs currently on is actually one that will lead her to loving the entirety of one man.
The scriptwriter of ADWD has written a complex, layered historical romance masked in playful comedy.
She is reminding viewers that we canât see people as 2D and we canât love in a 2D. superficial way, either (I.e. seeing someone as the âperfect/villainousâ man or woman). Thereâs nuance/imperfection/the ability to misjudge and be prideful in any person/relationship and, unless you accept the good with the bad (excluding abuse, which is why NH has to show true growth and maturity before he can be a healthy ML worthy of our girl) you wonât actually be able to love or be loved
Yâall, I canât with the trailer. It looks like Mu Dan and Jiang Chang are in for a world of suffering (as are we, the audience) and divorce and separation.
Thank goodness that their romance will be blooming before it all goes to hell, though.
I love Liu Yuning but he looks same in his every drama...
Itâs interesting how two people watching the same show can have different perspectives. I actually think and appreciate how much more vicious and unapologetically murderous LYN plays NH vs the ML in TPoB. I mean. He was angry and vicious at times at the beginning of TPoB but here, the man ramped it up 10 notches and made the character of NH so unique and different from his other characters. Itâs THE EYES, man.
But, of course, differences of opinion and all that.

Anyway, onward to the big reveal tomorrow!
I watched the Kdrama version and loved it so had high hopes that this version would be just as good (or better).
And OMG, ep. 19 with NHâs mother beaming like an anime character at SYM and NHâs supposed love! And then the transition to SYM putting on a cheesy performance that results in NH laughing and telling her to ânot act because [sheâs] terrible at it.â Lol.

Iâm betting itâs the uncle.

This, folks, is truly an epic love story.
