I already said this, but I often think about Jane Austen when watching this. The conversation between Assistant Lin and JiaJia about how romantic novels and dramas are looked down being considered superficial or silly reminded me so much about some very similar issue discussed in Northanger Abbey. The novel protagonist, Catherine Morland, is a novel hardcore fan but she is constantly looked down because of it as in that time novels were regarded as something less cultured and more like a low entertainment. So there is a discussion about the hypocrisy of this way of thinking and she is defended by the male protagonist, Mr. Tilney, who is a well educated man and also a novel reader.
