If I understood correctly, when they married Jiao was 15 and Qingjia was 19. As you said there is no Jiao father. Gao is already married and there is no Yu Niang.
Jiao and Qingjia had 3 children and raised Xiaobei since very young age, he even called them mother and father. In the end Xiaobei marries their daughter.
Looks like in the book there is no conspiracy, just slice of life things.

I really loved this drama Hu Jiao and Xu Qing Jia will always be in my heart as one of the best drama couples ever. It's so satisfying see how they grow together, mature, fall in love and become the most united couple. Together they can overcome everything <3
