I haven't seen it yet but according to description i think that it is continuation because in hua pi 2011 plays Wang Shen and in this one it is Wang Ying, the descendant of Wang Shen but maybe you already saw it. I just saw episode 30 and i was expecting to be BL. I am little bit disappointed too but we have 20 episodes until the end, anything can change. Even though in the drama Zuo You He and Fan Xiao Chuan maybe dont end up together, in my heart they will.

By the way, painted skin (2011) and painted skin - hua pi (2013) were based on story "Painted Skin" (画皮) from novel "Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio" (聊斋志异) by Pu Song Ling (蒲松齡) but this movie was based on cartoon " Painted Skin Master " (画皮师).
