I absolutely would have hated it if this ended in any other way. Specially since all the cracks were starting to show mid way through the show. Relationship was never the ML goal. Sure he did fall for her and truly loved her but she was never truly the priority and he kept most of his suffering to himself. He only showed the good times with her and never the bad ones. I say people should stop wanting all shows to have happy ending because life doesn't work that way. You don't always get the happy ending you're looking for.
