Understandable. It depends on the culture you grew up in. In South Asian culture for example, people call their spouse X's mom or X'dad (X being their eldest kids name) I've grown up hearing my parents call each other mom and dad with my name attached, so thats the norm for me.

Alan and Jeff didn't break up in the book. They weren't together. Jeff confessed in one of the epilogue chapters and Alan wanted to take things slow and get to know each other first, start off as friends.
