The apartment on the other hand is something he got on his own. If he just lets her swoop in and pay it off, how would it make him feel as a man? Like he can't handle his own finances? No. That's a different matter just like the wedding was. But the wedding ended up being a blessing for them both; affordable enough for him and kept her identity under wraps more or less, without the annoying media and other factors as she explained in the 2nd proposal scene.
