I also think that villains having backstory does make it interesting to understand their actions but on the other thought does having a backstory make their evil doings less evil? Many people go through the same things but choose a different path. So it was refreshing to not get the taxi driver's backstory as that's what he deserves no attention, no understanding. He was a psychopath serial killer, an evil person to the core. If he had been a grey character then his backstory would have been interesting.
