At the banquet, Anle’s sole purpose of being there was to be the antagonist to push HanYe to choose ChengEn…
If Anle wants Han Ye to marry Di Chen En then why did she propose to him in the first place? I get that's what she's trying to do at the banquet so was there any change of plan somewhere along the story that I miss?
It started off great up until ep.10 then everything has gone slack. It took them, what? 5 episodes to dawdle over that pick-the-bride banquet and now we're having another murder case which was hardly related to the main plot. We're by no means progressing anywhere. And I'm so fed up with Anle's character. Her antics are considered obnoxious and rude now especially at the banquet. I don't understand why she acted out like that. Intentional ot not, it makes me dislike her. Good thing she decided to drop the act now. Also, Luo Mingxi, damn, I'm so annoyed by his scheming character.
The only character I truly like in this drama is Han Ye. Oh, my fine Han Ye.
Right, off to watch ep.18 now before a new episode airs tonight!
All the three female leads are in denial. Ye Xiwu - Everyone knows that she's already fallen for Tantai Jin. She might or might not know it herself but she has to focus on her mission so she couldn't be distracted by love for now. Ye Bingchang - I doubt that she's that evil. Sure, she keeps telling herself that she loves no one but we saw in the latest episode that she's questioning her own doing. I found her character getting more interesting by the episode. Pian Ran - Yeah, sure, you just want 'momentary pleasure' with someone who looks like your ex. No strings attached, you keep telling him that. We'll see.
I rarely write review and this is my first time in ages (the first on this site) since this show has unexpectedly jump to the top of my most-favorite-dramas-of-all-time list. Not only that its storytelling is so engrossing that it constantly kept me on the edge, the plot is also very well-written, the cinematography captivating, everyone’s acting is superb, and with a thought-provoking ending at that.
I’m going to talk about the acting first because…Lan Jue. Damn! I fell for Jing Boran within the first few episodes and throughout the rest of the story, I couldn’t help but being mesmerized by his…everything, just like other male protagonists in this drama, LOL. He’s super good, there’s no doubt about that: the way he moves, speaks, and especially the way he uses those pair of doe eyes to seduce everyone. Like I’ve said, I fell for him within the first few episodes.
The other actors were also very good at portraying their characters, special mention to Song Weilong, Hong Yao and Wang Duo. Damn, the way they looked at Lan Jue! I’ve never seen so many heart eyes in one series! Anyone who said this drama wasn’t a bromance need to find themselves a pair of glasses. I’m not gonna say it’s a BL since the drama specifically said that it’s not one but you can’t deny the intended chemistry between many characters which were so palpable and even off the charts sometimes.
I like that the theme of the story is “grey”. Lan Jue is one of the most fascinating characters I’ve ever watched and Jing Boran had portrayed him oh-so-well; he’s smart, cunning, charming, complex, and the screenwriter has let us know from the get-go that he’s no goody two shoes who would do what he needed to do to accomplish his goal. I really love the scene where he fought with his evil side, and eventually his good side won because of…a cat! How cute is that?!
As the story progresses, viewers get to explore the differences between the main leads’ core values: white (Zhang Ping) vs grey (Lan Jue) vs black (Gu Qingzhang) which culminated at the end of the story. Through their adventures, we could see that by always doing the most righteous thing (white), Zhang Ping had brought dangers not only to himself but also to the people he loves. His stakes were higher and higher until in the end, where the stakes were super high, Zhang Ping had to choose his path.
I won’t judge whether what Zhang Ping did in the end was right. But if I were him, I’d do the same. There are also parts that I don’t like where I found that the characters’ motives didn’t make senses, which includes:
1) Lan Jue and his poison suicide: he’d come that far, why he’d want to end his life at that moment I wouldn’t understand 2) Zhang Ping’s Shifu’s murder: not enough reason for the guard to kill him off 3) The whole blood poison thing that won’t have any effect if not inhale directly, LOL. I know it’s fantasy but hey, you can’t simply linger in there without feeling anything!
TL;DR : Go watch A League of Nobleman. I highly recommend it. You won’t regret spending 20 hours watching great performances from everyone with compelling intrigues which will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout.
