The ML is a total a**hole. The FL is idk, she's very emotional. She's a pushover. I mean the ML tortures her almost every episode and she keeps on clinging to him. Know what? I don't have any problems with leads that are forgiving but this FL is just stupid atp. I am okay for her to forgive the ML but to stay with him despite everything? Nope. That's just plain stupid. I think she's the weakest FL I've ever encountered in the drama world and this is coming from someone who's watching typical lakorns too.

She's more on being a responsible citizen rather than having a goal. Initially she just wanted to get married with ML but things happened so she was forced to enter the palace. She's always been a responsible and righteous person so when she was given new responsibilities she just accepted them. She's like the "go with the flow" kind of character. What I love the most about her though is that she's loyal to the country and uses her brain to fight against those who harbor evil intentions to get the throne. She does not attack but defends unlike the FL in Yanxi who attacks to achieve her goals/revenge. Now that I think about it, she reminds me of Minglan from SOM. LOL. So what I'm saying is that viewers should not expect FL to act like the one in Yanxi just because they are both palace dramas. This is a good palace drama so long as you don't compare it to other palace dramas out there like Yanxi Palace.
I'm on ep 14 now and I'm already bored. Anyway, this reminds me of the drama Story of Minglan too. I also felt bored watching SOM but it was only for a few episodes in the beginning . This one, idk but it's not as enjoyable as SOM. I think it lacks intensity or impact idk how to describe it. The FL is supposed to be smart but so far she's just surviving without doing much. Everytime she says "I know what to do.", I can't help but roll my eyes because she's not actually doing anything. I'll still try to continue watching it.
This is my first Zhang Zi Yi TV series so it felt like I binged watched 68 movies. LOL. So I started watching it because I really like the actress in her movies such as Crouching Tigers Hidden Dragons, Memoirs of Geisha and The House of Flying Daggers. For me, she's really beautiful and her acting is good too. Anyway, this is not your typical historical-costume drama. This is more than that ...
Main Points of this drama : 1. FL's family (royal family) is shit except for her mother and later on her brother. They are all busy plotting against each other for the throne. I honestly believe somehow they care for the princess (FL) but their titles and political goals are more important than kinship. 2. FL for me is an inspiring character. If you're looking for a strong FL like the one in Yanxi Palace, then this is not it. This is not your typical strong female lead. I'd say she's strong for staying true to herself despite all the betrayals. She's strong because she's kind even to her enemies. She's strong for not being afraid in face of dangers. Yes it's quite frustrating to watch her actions/decisions but I think she did the right. Also, it seems like FL is the most beautiful woman in the drama because she's often the reason why these men are fighting. 3. ML is one of the best ML in dramas. I really love the fact that this ML really looks like a general in my imagination. He's not the typical handsome ML but he's a 'manly man with a lot of mannishness in his manliness'. He's also always on time to save the princess. The only thing maybe I did not like that he did here was keeping her wife's health condition a secret and acting on it without his wife's consent. But that's fine because they resolved it quickly when she learned about it. ML is also not spared of betrayals. His closest friend (i think) and comrade also betrayed him for power and love/obsession. LOL 4. I also love the FL's maid whom she met in the military camp with her husband. The maid was really loyal, even died to persuade her husband to stop the rebellion. 5. The ending is beautiful. Though it was short but it made it everything worth it. Yes, it's happy ending for our leads.
Costumes are very beautiful especially the FL's. Is it worth watching? Well... Just willing or not...
If you're looking for romance then this is not it. This reminds me of Yanxi Palace but it lacks greatly idk why maybe because I just really loved the revenge/schemes/harems stories in Yanxi that this one doesn't have. This one is more on fighting for the throne and FL/ML just trying to get by. FL is smart but don't expect her character to be like the FL in Yanxi because they have different plots. The FL here was just forced to stay in the palace without any goals unlike FL in Yanxi who was after a revenge and had to deal with evil concubines.
I watched this in x2 speed. It was good. There are just scenes that are supposed to be dramatic but I ended up laughing because of the BG music and over the top acting; like when the male lead tore the divorce paper and threw it in the air. LOL. The leads have great chemistry as married couple. Their kid is very cute though it was shocking when the kid's nanny would just bring him to places without the FL's knowledge just because he said so. Throw your logic before watching it. FL is smart and a fighter. ML was a jerk in the first few episodes but eventually turned nice and sweet. The second couple (ML's assistant and FL's assistant)is okay but their relationship is kind'a weird for me. I love them for being loyal to ML and FL. They're very good friends to the leads. Then of course villains deserved their ending. YES, IT'S A HAPPY ENDING AND NO UNNECESSARY DEATHS, So if you're really bored and have nothing to watch then you can try this.
