I was wondering what it was, and your comment sums up my exact feeling too. Everything is so grand and blah at the same time. It's not the actors fault, they are doing great with what they're given, the fantasy world and setting they are living in. It's the story and editing falling into the live-action trap of being too borderline PG-13 video game/anime-like. Too much surface without diving deep.
For example, Til The End of the Moon went soo deep they nearly confused the watchers. On the other hand, The Legend of Shen Li story was super simple but I felt sooo much because it focused on building a meaningful CP.

As a fan of the book, and now having watched the drama adaptation, I think this is a great adaptation that captures the essence of the novel, including the dynamics of the relationships and faithful to the ending. It's Luo Qiqi's journey through the years that were most turbulent, and meeting the most influential people in her life. It is not a happy fluffy story, and it feels really realistic, like life itself. No one is perfect, and there are a lot of push and pull in the relationships. This is one of those stories that will stay with me forever.
