I liked that Pat didn't want Prem to just leave the conversation, but talk it out. However, sometimes, you gotta let them walk away cause staying can escalate the situation too. Gotta calm down and come back. I love how it was dealt with.

Ok, so in the novel, the father refused to have her marry the ex. But, they did want her to break up with Pat, and the mother (I get pissed off just thinking about it) wanted Prem to do it as a gift to her. They emotionally manipulated the fuck out of her.
