I really enjoyed this one. š„¹ It was messy, emotional and bittersweet in the best way, and somehow I got genuinely attached to these characters. There were moments that hurt, moments that made me smile, but overall it left a warm feeling in me. Iām really glad I gave this one a chance. Also just like what NLE said The chemistry between XiaoFan and Lu Qing, his brother in law, is undeniable. Every look, every conversation, and every moment of restraint is filled with tension. Even when they are not doing anything, you can feel something building between them.
writing - grown men behaving childishly like even after the last time skip one is locking another in his apartment…
*(Older cheng yi have one expression all throughout the drama)
The acting is restrained because the characters is emotionally repressedā¦.
Especially with a drama this toxic and heavy, acting isnāt necessarily going to look like constant dramatic crying, screaming and facial expressions.!!!
writing - grown men behaving childishly like even after the last time skip one is locking another in his apartment…
Okay, this is actually a criticism I can engage with because youāre addressing different aspects of the drama rather than reducing everything to Lu Fengās behavior. I can agree that Double Helix has inconsistencies, some questionable writing choices, average cinematography/direction, and that not every performance worked for you.
Where I disagree is with your interpretation of the characterization. The fact that these characters repeatedly make irrational, unhealthy and self-destructive decisions doesnāt automatically mean they lack depth. To me, thatās actually a major part of what the story is exploring. These are psychologically damaged people whose relationships are shaped by obsession, trauma, dependency, guilt and an inability to communicate properly.
Especially with Lu Feng, I donāt think his behavior is supposed to be viewed as healthy or admirable. His possessiveness, obsession and inability to respect boundaries are deliberately disturbing parts of his character. You can condemn his actions while still recognizing that there is psychological complexity behind the character and his motivations.
And honestly, I think thatās where our interpretations differ. What you see as characters having āno self-respectā and the story lacking depth, I see as a deliberately dysfunctional dynamic that is meant to make the viewer uncomfortable and conflicted. The execution may not have been perfect, but I donāt think the characters are as shallow as youāre making them out to be.
DH is a psychologically messy, morally disturbing, uneven but genuinely a great compelling dark romance.!!!!!
If sexual violence makes the entire story unacceptable to you, you can absolutely rate it low⦠but what happened to the *writing * acting * cinematography * directing * characterisation * pacing * emotional impact * themes * execution
Or are you just an hater
Double Helix is clearly designed to make you uncomfortable and conflicted. Lu Feng isnāt written to be a wholesome boyfriend you can simply root for. His obsession, possessiveness and inability to respect boundaries are part of the character construction. You can condemn him while still recognizing that heās an interesting, psychologically complicated character.
you can absolutely hate Lu Fengās actions, hate the relationship, hate the storyās choicesā¦.thatās your opinion. But giving the entire movie a lower rating because you found the characters morally disturbing is a different madnessā¦.(sorry you are just dumb) And honestly, Double Helix is clearly designed to make you uncomfortableā¦You can absolutely condemn the things he does and still acknowledge that, as a character, he is psychologically complex and genuinely interesting to watch.
Please after this movie ends⦠your review should only be about the movieā¦.AND the movie characters pleaseā¦. No need to move mad and add Justinās controversyā¦.. also august was genuinely a nice characterā¦what happened was unfortunately YEAH but august and Justin are two different people š«
I know none of them are innocent and done right but still they cheated and they are cheater. Even if makio forgive…
Arghhhh thank youšš I was genuinely so pisssed likeā¦. They really didnāt try to call him back or talk things outā¦!!! And eji was so quick to call her my wife ā¦like wtf brooo ā¦.
Also there was something off about naomi⦠I just donāt know how to put it She was very wrong with the way she made shiho feltā¦
I get she was under an incredible amount of stress after giving birth, and that may have affected her judgment but stillllll arghhhhhh that is no way to talk to someone who looked up to youā¦
I know this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I felt the story did not do a good job balancing sympathy with accountability.
I donāt think Itsuki is a bad person, and I never expected him to be perfectā¦but what frustrated me was that the story seemed to expect me to excuse almost every decision he made simply because he was hurting.
I completely understand why Itsuki became the person he was. His past explains a lot of his fears and self-destructive behavior. But explaining someoneās actions isnāt the same as excusing them.
He was very disrespectful to his ex partner He didnāt communicate his feelings at all Him going into self destruct was his choice ! And he was a little bit too rude to that girl
And my goshā¦yoma He was left trying to make sense of a relationship that was falling apart without ever being told why. I still enjoyed the drama because it made me think, and I appreciate morally flawed characters. But for me, the writing leaned a little too heavily into asking the audience to sympathize with Itsuki instead of holding him accountable. Understanding a character and agreeing with their choices are not the same thing.
Gosh!!!⨠I honestly didnāt expect to love this drama as much as I did, but it completely blew me away.
Everything just worked. The story never felt all over the place, and every episode kept me invested. There were moments where I genuinely couldnāt predict what would happen next, which made the experience even better.
The acting deserves a lot of praise. Every emotion felt believable, and the cast made me care about the characters from beginning to end. The chemistry was another highlight. It never felt forced; it was natural, and that made every interaction between the characters even more enjoyable to watch.
The production quality was also impressive. The cinematography, soundtrack, and pacing all came together beautifully. Nothing felt out of place or unnecessary.
For me, this is one of those rare dramas where all the pieces fit together perfectly. Great writing, great acting, great chemistry, and a story that kept me emotionally invested throughout.
Itās an easy 10/10 from me, and Iām definitely going to watch this again šø
A special thanks to skynaniā¤ļøāØand every other cast of course šŗš
No need to compare two shows, both needed two different types of acting. And I personally think both series had…
I wasnāt trying to compare the shows as a whole⦠I only mentioned Revenge Love because someone else brought it up. My point was specifically about the acting⦠not about which series is better overall⦠Yes I also think both shows required different performances and both casts did well.
That said, Iāve seen many comments online saying RL is better than DHā¦.I donāt think thatās a fair comparison because theyāre different genres with different storytelling styles and acting demandsā¦If anything, I was simply defending DH from comparisons that RL fans startedā¦
I do think the actors in DH are talented, but their skills just weren't utilized properly. Yichen's actor is walking…
Also whether I used Ai or not is beside the point. People use dictionaries, grammar checkers, translation tools, and AI to organize their thoughts all the time. A writing tool doesnāt create opinionā¦it helps express it more clearlyā¦.
Iām addressing this because I donāt want people who use AI to feel ashamed or think theyāre somehow less intelligent. Using a tool doesnāt replace critical thinking.
I do think the actors in DH are talented, but their skills just weren't utilized properly. Yichen's actor is walking…
lol If my argument is wrong, explain why itās wrong. If all you have is āyou used ChatGPT,ā then weāre no longer discussing Double Helixā¦.weāre discussing your assumptions.
You want to deliberately shift the conversation to something to think u can winā¦
And thatās not very smart⦠if u keep up this dumb attitude u wouldnāt go very far in life ā¦.
You never actually stated which sentence made no sense
I feel like you donāt have the ability to discuss the acting anymore
I do think the actors in DH are talented, but their skills just weren't utilized properly. Yichen's actor is walking…
Itās funny how some people assume that any well-structured response must be from ChatGPT. Instead of speculating about how a comment was written, why not address the argument itself? Dismissing a point because you think AI helped write it weird lmao
I do think the actors in DH are talented, but their skills just weren't utilized properly. Yichen's actor is walking…
Whether I used ChatGPT or not is irrelevant. If you think the argument is wrong, explain why itās wrong instead of making dumb assumptions
You said my response is āmeaningless word salad,ā but you didnāt actually refute the point I made. I argued that a restrained performance can be an intentional acting choice, especially for an emotionally repressed character. If you disagree with that, explain why. Letās discuss the acting, not speculate about how I wrote my comment.
I do think the actors in DH are talented, but their skills just weren't utilized properly. Yichen's actor is walking…
I still think the overall acting in Double Helix is stronger than RL
For me, the cast in Double Helix handled a much wider emotional range. They had to portray trauma, obsession, grief, emotional repression, family conflict, and intense romantic attachment. Those are incredibly demanding emotions to convey convincingly.
Of course, everyone will have different preferences. But for me, Double Helix delivered the more compelling overall performances.
I do think the actors in DH are talented, but their skills just weren't utilized properly. Yichen's actor is walking…
I think youāre confusing acting choices with acting ability.
Yi Chen isnāt supposed to be an expressive character. Heās emotionally reserved and keeps almost everything to himself, so I donāt expect him to have dramatic facial expressions in every scene.
If your criticism is that the director should have allowed for more emotional variation, thatās a valid discussion. But saying the actor had āthe same expressionā overlooks the fact that subtle acting relies on micro-expressions, body language, timing, and toneā¦not exaggerated facial changes. Not every good performance has to be loud or obvious. Sometimes the emotion comes from the way a character speaks, reacts, or even stays silent.
Also just like what NLE said The chemistry between XiaoFan and Lu Qing, his brother in law, is undeniable. Every look, every conversation, and every moment of restraint is filled with tension. Even when they are not doing anything, you can feel something building between them.
