Yeah, they were a thing in the novel but weren't central focus or well explained IMO.

The most tell-tale sign of this is definitely White taking over Black's place in the gang. Kinda symbolic. I really hope this is another red herring and nothing extremely bad happens - I don't know how I'll be able to handle it.

Everything is different. The only things that are the same between the two are: character names, Black and White being twins, and that White takes Blacks identity. The novel is basically just a fluffy college romance. There's no gang, no rebellion, no Tawi, nothing at all. In the novel, Gumpa was a loan shark and Todd appeared in one chapter as White's friend from college. They aren't even really compairable they're so different.
