It was a reincarnation story and those are banned in China right now. The story makes zero sense without reincarnation (the enlightened motivations of the MC would make no sense), so I suspect that the beginning is a way around censorship.

I'm just thinking the multiple relationships, rebelling against the central government, the sci-fi elements, and so forth will be censored heavily until it is an entirely different story. China's TV is a cruddy place to tell an interesting story.

It is following the book pretty closely as far as I can remember. This is the "breath" before the storm moment. Once the action starts, it gets intense.
