It was a reincarnation story and those are banned in China right now. The story makes zero sense without reincarnation (the enlightened motivations of the MC would make no sense), so I suspect that the beginning is a way around censorship.

I never know why they insist on showing the story of the parents in such detail. I remember watching the first adaption of this and dropping it because the story was so lame. Then I came back and watched the story of the son, and it was awesome.

I can't speak for the TV series, but the book does contain romance. I suspect that the TV series will make more of an emphasis on it.

It is following the book pretty closely as far as I can remember. This is the "breath" before the storm moment. Once the action starts, it gets intense.
