I read the novel and found this movie "decent/fine/okay/kindafun". But I have just one question... why is this a MOVIE and not a SERIES !? Every single complaint could have been prevented if they just took more time to flesh out the characters and explain the story in depth more. With such a short runtime, I don't know what the heck they were thinking. ORV has such a deep and nuanced story, characters, powerscalling, worldbuilding, and it feels like we didn't even get to see a fraction of that displayed here. Just imagine if this were a Sweet Home, style netflix series. We got robbed...
The mother and daughter are the main characters of this story, the plot revolves around them learning to understand each other. There is barely any romance here, as it's not the focus. Do not skip the mother's scenes, no matter how much it annoys and angers you. There's a message the writer is trying to convey here, the self-sacrifice of motherhood and the insane pressures a daughter is put into, to get rich, marry and have kids. The mother couldn't realise her own dream so she uses her daughter, like a puppet with no free will, to realise it for her instead. Very much, the Asian mother stereotype is taken to its absolute extreme here, it will infuriate you, but that's kind of the point...
Pretty forgettable story and characters. If it wasn't tagged as GL, I probably would have just assumed they are just best friends because their feelings were not expressed or explored at all. Jealousy and affection isn't exclusive to just crushes/couples, but normal friends experience it too.

Don't recommend any live-action remakes of anime shows please if you can, those are the worst ones since the anime is always better. Something original, but can also be from a novel/manga.

So it really is just a case of getting used to it huh? This is coming from someone who grew up on, then gave up on watching Hollywood because I felt everything became too boring/samey after a while. Tried getting into Bollywood but, if we're talking overacting then Bollywood easily takes the cake. That's when I found K-dramas. "This is new.. the characters are much more expressive" I remember myself thinking. Now I can see how that can be attributed to "overacting" too. I used to love K-dramas but now I find them falling into the same Hollywood traps when all the new shows are trying to mimic its international success by catering heavily to Western audiences. That's why I asked someone to recommend me good Chinese/Japanese dramas instead. However all the replies were just Chinese dramas, which is why I assumed there wasn't any good Japanese ones to recommend.
I've only seen the darker/psychological/thriller J-dramas/movies since I find that the acting is a lot more toned down when dealing with those topics; bullying/serial killers/stalkers, etc. BUT I'm not trying to be depressed all the time, I need more romance/comedies. Good ones!!

Curious, I'd be more willing to compare Kdramas "overreacting" to that of anime. It's mostly in the cliche moments. The "Kyaaa!" embarrassed scenes in anime and the infamous Break up meltdown scene in Kdrama literally 1-2 episodes before the "Happy" marriage ending. You mostly learn to ignore it because it does stop eventually. However that is not possible with Japanese Dramas. Because it feels like the overreacting just never stops even for a second. I've watched some good Jdramas but they are extremely hard to come by and mostly from before 2010. The same with Chinese dramas. I'm only now getting into Chinese dramas after some good recommendations but it feels like it'll be a while longer before I can do the same with Japanese dramas. The acting first needs to be improved ASAP before I do.
