Yes. To be honest, I don't like the word bromance - it's murky and confusing. For me, there are openly queer stories, there are stories with queercode romance, there are stories just about friendship, without a romantic subtext. And sometimes there is queerbait in stories, which I strongly disapprove of. So, for me, FoF belongs to the category of queercode romance. The relationship between ZYZ and ZYC (+ the story of Li Lun) is not just separate queerbait hints. It is a poetic, deeply worked out story of love and mutual transformation. And the scenes between them are always sensually filmed.
This is gonna be so random but does anyone feel that the bromance here is even stronger than The Untamed / Word…
For me - definitely. I watched Word of Honor, and although I liked the drama, Fangs of fortune left an incomparably stronger impression on me. Some may disagree with me, but for me subjectively Fangs of fortune is a queer love story, just covered with a formal het to pass censorship. And in principle, het is built in such a way that it allows for different interpretations of the relationship - from polyamorous romantic to platonic. But the entire story of the relationship between Yichen/ Yuanzhou /LiLun is absolutely clearly queercode, from beginning to end, and their relationship feels deep and real. The first love that went catastrophically wrong, faced with the dark and dirty reality of the world. The second love, which blossomed on the most unexpected soil for this - and in spite of fate, becomes fate. The theme of feeling like an anomaly and finding each other. And many other subtle moments that well describe the deep dynamics of romantic relationships.
1. Those first fight scenes we got between Yuanzhou and Yichen where Yichen wanted to k!ll him to avenge his family...…
I recently watched to the end and yes, this is, first of all, the love story of Yichen and Yuanzhou. Now it is even more obvious. From the moment when Yuanzhou comes to look for Yichen at the Bureau in the first episode, to the moment when Yichen goes to look for Yuanzhou's soul around the world in the epilogue - and finds it. And like in The Little Mermaid - the Mermaid had to kill the prince or turn into sea foam if the prince did not love her. And here Yuanzhou turned into rain. But Yichen loved him, and therefore his soul was preserved and found its way home.
GJM is trying so hard to copy Goblin in this drama. "I'll come with the rain" and the contract, all copy from…
I watched Goblin until the middle - I got bored and stopped. I don't want to say that the drama is boring, it's just not my thing. But I watch Fangs of Fortune drama holding my breath. But in any case, as a person familiar with the heroes and the plot of Goblin, I can say that these dramas are absolutely different - in the characters, relationships, the main theme of the story. The theme of an immortal striving for death, but finding his desire to live in the one who must kill him is an archetypal theme, wandering through myths and stories since ancient times. Goblin is not a pioneer here. The use of archetypal plots and images is not plagiarism - in essence, this is precisely the skill of the writer. No one reinvents the wheel.
On a personal note, I think about what makes this drama so addictive. And I think it's that they really pull at that visceral feeling of loneliness and longing that many people are familiar with - especially those who find refuge in fantasy art. And then they give you a queer family where everyone loves each other, accepts each other, and is willing to die for each other.
Q for all you fellow writers: did anyone else get the sense from that road-side one-on-one between LL and ZYC…
I'm not sure that this particular scene is the origin of the story, but it is definitely one of the key ones in terms of what and why this whole story was created. The moment where the main theme is literally spoken. The theme of the relationship between the "anomalies" and fate and the world that organizes this harsh fate for them. Their loneliness, anger, hope and personal choice inside this cage.
It's a really amazingly poetic story. And how carefully but very consistently this love song is sung - through parallels, words and references scattered throughout the drama. The words quoted by WQ about the deceased loved one becoming a star - and Yinglong's words about wanting to be the first star. The umbrella theme in the relationship between ZYZ and Li Lun - and the words of Yichen's brother about his name meaning roof - and how he is the first to cover ZYZ with his cloak. And much, much more.
I think that at its core, the whole drama is really about three - ZYZ, ZYC and Li Lun. Their fate, their choices,…
And the story also focuses on the personalities "anomalies" and what their life can be like. But Wen Xiao is like a quiet shore of normality in this crazy world. This is her role. And I really like how the director played this theme with the fact that her character gives "normality" to the drama, giving this theme more depth. Yes, for me she is not the main character of the drama. And I - subjectively, this is my personal feeling - see her relationship with the male heroes as more platonic. But her quiet support is also important. She is also an indispensable member of their found family.
I don't know what I should comment about episode 26, but the love story between Zhao Yuan Zhou and Zhuo Yi Chen…
I think that at its core, the whole drama is really about three - ZYZ, ZYC and Li Lun. Their fate, their choices, their relationships. How all three were "broken by the narrative" and how they respond differently. What it's like to be an anomaly in this world. How the first relationship was destroyed by contradictions, and how others grow out of contradictions, resisting fate itself.
Jokes aside though, today’s episode was absolutely stunning. So much dark beauty captured effortlessly in hues…
I think about how for two individuals who have always felt like an "anomaly" this mutual "I understand you" weighs more than the words "I love you", and means basically the same thing, only more acutely.
Is it just me or the bromance dynamic gives Beyond evil vibe? Like a little bit. I think that's why I am vibing…
They do have a somewhat similar dynamic. Not similar in all aspects, but - a young man frozen by a traumatic past and a "good demon" hiding his pain behind irony. Who start as enemies, but make each other more alive. And constantly mirror each other. And also the initial oath to kill (arrest) the "demon", which eventually begins to feel like a curse.
I know the only thing I will be dreaming of tonight is Zhao Yuan Zhou looking at me with the most heartbreakingly…
Really! And what about Zhao Yuan Zhou , who was used to avoiding anger, drowning in guilt for his attacks, but when one egg flew into Yichen's head, Yuanzhou immediately began to switch to the "now I'll show you what a big scary demon killer is" mode.
It could be a reference to the special connection between Yuan Zhou's and Yi Chen's ancestors - as I understand…
Yes. And that their destinies are also intertwined around the theme of protecting their world. And they too contain their own contradiction between oath, duty and personal relationships.
episode 22. why did Yi Cheng had the same marking as Li lun? I did not understand this scene. Was his ancestor…
It could be a reference to the special connection between Yuan Zhou's and Yi Chen's ancestors - as I understand it, the history of this blue sword is connected to the blood of both of them. But I like to think that maybe these images in Yuan Zhuo's imagination also a symbol of Yichen taking the place in his heart that Li Lun occupied. But this also brings with it many conflicting feelings for Yuan Zhou
I second Blood of Youth. Also if you don't mind BL adaptations, Guardian and Word of Honor. But fair warning:…
If you don't want other people to be mean to you, keep in mind that "dirty" is not an opinion. "Dirty" is an attack, and it can quite rightly provoke an attack in return. An opinion is "I'm not interested", "I don't care about this topic", "I don't like watching this". Try using these expressions next time.
