In short, Situ Ling was someone who is obsessed over someone over a bit of gratitude, enough to be made his lifelong goal

He originally wanted it for himself. After finding out Ming Yi was poisoned, he wanted to get it for her instead. Realising she doesn't need it nor him, he now wants it for himself become powerful so everyone will submit to him. That's not inconsistent writing if you ask me, but rather evolution of his delusion over time. Plus we know he took a bit of gratitude as affection, and clearly knows she is in love with JBZ
