Title Destined
All this time I thought this drama is gonna be angsty (judging from sinopsis and the wrap up special video). But…
i had the same thought! i'm sure i'm going to be obsessed either way so i'm not concerned, but like.... the november video did absolutely show someone being on fire LOL. i have no idea about the source novel but if i had to hazard a guess, i think it'll be more light hearted at the start, and then it becomes more serious with gu jiusi's change of character? looks like he's going to be commanding an army, so there'll be no time for comedy then. to compare to NLB, while i do absolutely adore that show, its biggest theme (obviously, feminism) was not portrayed at all in the trailers or plot synopsis so maybe it's a similar case here?

Title Hikaru no Go Spoiler
I've been thinking about this for months, but I figure I may as well just type it out now in honor of today being…
And then the entire scene is dedicated to him gushing about Chu Ying. I love how it's shot, too. We never actually see Chu Ying once in this sequence! To new viewers, I imagine it builds up a mystery into what in the world he can be talking about, but to repeat viewers/fans of the original animanga, it feels like a very tongue-in-cheek way of teasing "oh, you know who he's talking about" that I think is really neat

"He's quite tall. I have to lift my head just to look at him."

Out of all things, this is the first way he chooses to describe Chu Ying. Honestly, I think it's impossible to Quite explain everything that Chu Ying is to Shi Guang. He's how he met all of his friends, how he discovered his life passion, how he learned pretty much all of his life lessons and morals, and more. So out of Everything? That's what he chooses to say first? I think it's adorable, especially since this is from 18 year-old Shi Guang's perspective, that I think the height difference when he first met him when he was 9 really left that much of an impact on him.

"He's older than anyone you know, but he always acts like a kid who refuses to grow up."

This is just a perfect, very to-the-point description of the enigma that is Chu Ying. Can't think of a way to better describe him in one sentence.

"Our relationship is more than just being inseparable. Shadow exists because of light."

Haha get it because his name is 光, also I really like that they used the shot of the water scene from episode 3 here because of the dark/light contrast

"He follows me very closely. Every single second. Because of him, all of my happiness, sadness, madness, affection doubled compared to others. In moments of laughter, victory, and rejoicing, he is like a mirror, reflecting the highlights of my life. And when I'm sad, defeated, and having self-doubt, he is like the sun, giving me endless energy."

This is!! Such a good line!! Shi Guang goes through so, so much over the course of the series, and this implies that while yes, Chu Ying is his own separate person, but they go through everything together, so in many ways, they are one in the same!

"I asked him to leave. I begged him, scolded him, and threatened him. It was all in vain. He wants to follow me until the end of the world."

I just think this is funny because of the drama-added timeskip at the start of the series, but I do think that highlighting that their relationship isn't exactly perfect is important because it does take Chu Ying some time to realize that Shi Guang isn't going to be like his previous host

"He said that God has chosen him for me. If he's right, I thank God from the bottom of my heart."

I think about this quote!! So much!! I don't even have anything really to add onto it but just MAN he loves Chu Ying that much, because meeting him is the most important thing ever happened in his life!!

I also just love how the flash-forward incorporates the scene where Shi Guang lays out all of his sentimental items on the floor and he stares at them because of how as we progress through the series, we see how he came to obtain them, and which irreplaceable friendships they all represent.

Then we end the scene with the closure to the first shot. It's Shi Guang, still kneeling in front of the temple, same clothes and all, except that day has now turned to night. It begs the perfect question to open the series with: what happened here? After this flash-forward, we meet 9 year-old Shi Guang, who wants nothing to do with Go or anything remotely like that. What happened to him that changed him to the person that would kneel in front of a temple all day. You'd have to watch to find out!

All of this, and only two minutes in. Man. I love Hikaru no Go. Happy May 5th, everyone <3

I've been thinking about this for months, but I figure I may as well just type it out now in honor of today being Hikago day. I completely and utterly adore the first two minutes of episode one, and I give the drama major props for having it be something that was added in. (Will try to explain this in a way that is spoiler-free, though it is all told from the perspective of Shi Guang at the end of the series. Spoiler tag simply because this is long lol)

First thing we see is a shot of Lan Yin Temple, a reoccurring location that becomes very important later on.

"My name is Shi Guang. I'm 18 years old. There's nothing special about me."

And that's it. That's all our titular (... kinda) character has to say about himself! (Though I'd disagree, I think he is incredibly special haha) Immediately, there's a stark contrast presented. What is a regular, plainly dressed 18 year old kid doing at a temple all by himself, and what is he doing that would have him kneeling at the entrance?

"But I have an extraordinary friend."

i love the show and am still watching but I feel like it's too progressive. Like implementing a new currency and…
i feel the same way! in ep 26, i was thinking “okay now that we’re moving past that plot point, certainly it’s time for the plot to take a rest…? can we just see the leads being cute together it feels like it’s been forever since that happened?” and then… no it looks like we’re immediately jumping into another plot point? what??? 😭😭

more romcom or there're any political or palace issues??
based off the first six episodes at least, it seems to lean more romcom? yin zheng does use his position as prince to help figure out solutions to socioeconomic issues, implying that there’s more going on off-screen. i wouldn’t be surprised if it gets more political later on just because of the episode length. definitely too early to tell for sure, but the tone has been lighthearted that i don’t think it’ll take a sharp turn into anything too deep

This is a fun watch and certainly love to see one scene get really fleshed out over and over. It was very detailed.…
I love this show very very dearly but I definitely agree with a lot of your points, especially with how the police was treated that was definitely my biggest gripe with it by far. But I do want to say that re:

4. When Shiqing gets excited about Lu Di potentially joining the loop with them, Xiao Heyun argues that on a technical level when they force their way into Lu Di’s bag, they prevented him from stepping onto the bus entirely— which is different from how she pulled him off the bus. Therefore, maybe that was the criteria that he met for joining the loop but Lu Di didn’t. Also, he argues that if them waking up earlier is key to the mystery, from a logistical standpoint he has no clue what that would mean for Lu Di since they’re further back in the loop before he even gets on the bus. Of course though, this is all just his own speculation, and there is never a clear answer given by the end

As for why her (and why him) in the first place? It is never explained directly, but IMO I look at it with a whole hand-wavy soulmates/fate/etc explanation. I think it would’ve detracted from the story it was trying to tell if it went too into the time loop itself, so I like that it was left open to interpretation. (Plus the other part of the novel about the purple delivery guy and a woman that’s not in the drama does help support the whole “time loops are about love” theming.)

6. This one is actually given an explanation. The girl said she had the photo uploaded in the cloud, so Shiqing asked for her login information. So when she looped back, all she had to do was type that in to get to the picture.

The last one got me!!! Loool 🤣
Thank you, thank you! 😂 I admit that I MAYYY have gone a little overboard on my screenshot button when I watched that episode lol

I'm still confused like, okay clearly the cat ears are a part of the theming of the show with how the staff wear them, so it would make sense if they made the whole cast wear them... but no?? It's just him? He just decided to wear them because why not APPARENTLY?

Have you seen him in his recent event😂😂😂
The LV one? Honestly I was trying to recover from the whiplash of seeing him look more normal there, compared to whatever in the world was going on in the photoshoot he did for Wallpaper that dropped like 24 hours prior 🤣

This show is very good because it asks very deep philosophical questions and explores the way the human psyche deals with them, such as:

• Are we able to put our own goals aside to cooperate in alliances if it means overcoming a larger foe together?
• How well are you able to manage your time, knowing that will impact what you are capable of in the future?
• What if we put cat ears on Bai Jingting?

"If I exist for Hikaru's sake, then Hikaru will in turn exist for someone else's sake." The drama incorporated…
Thank you! :’) I spent the whole drama thinking in the back of my mind how they would handle the scene, and… Oh. I didn’t expect it would break me all over again That much; I sobbed.

I do want to write an incredibly comprehensive comparison between the animanga and the drama eventually! It would be pretty hard to do though because the drama’s approach of mostly directly adapting the scenes but Also being its own thing and nearly every character having characterization differences would make that… pretty difficult to do. By all means it feels like the drama should not work, but it was written in a way that’s so clever that it just does!

Like for one example, iirc Sai is treated as his clinging to the living world as 1000 years of “selfishness”, but that’s… just not how Chu Ying is characterized. One of the last things he tells Shi Guang is making him repeat life lessons, so that he knows he’ll be okay without him. They’re different approaches!
