From the opening theme, it seems like only the black watch is used for time travel ... I dont think it will be useful. Unless SJ uses it to travel in time later, maybe?

My only thought about this is the trumatic accident that wouldnt let him get over her or that accident. The guilt is more than love. Like Inhyuk said, he felt sorry for her all the time (when she went back to the future after 2nd time and he called her and said that)
