I'd call his "determination to protect" an "obsession to own" actually. He thinks LR is still the same LR of the past. Little does he know that LR knows every shady little things he did in the past, how he framed PWX for her poisoning when in fact, he's the one who poisoned her. He's such an hypocrite! Yes, in the past, she'd interrupt PWX, but now, our FL seems to have full trust in our ML. Her feelings for PWX has reached its peak, she could no longer deny nor refuse it. Now, it's time for PWX to rub it in. That would be considered pay back for how he seduced another man's wife in the past.
