honestly, I don’t have high hopes. I’ve read the book of glory and female general and they had changed SO MUCH!!!! to the point they couldve just made it into an original adaptation.
I am more than sure they’ll change a lot here too because a lot of it won’t pass cencorship and the story is too long for the approx 40 episodes. I believe they’ll remove some arcs. it’s best to watch the drama thinking it’s an original story rather than wishing for a faithful adaptation.
i do agree, meng ziyi’s face doesn’t suit the supposed innocent face of shen Miao. she’s a demon hiding behind that innocent face, that’s why no one even doubted her. meng ziyi would be a better choice for jian ruan from ill fated consort as she’s meant to have this icy beauty look.

really? it’s been a long time since I read it. though, i consider it rape because the FL wasn’t really willing. I remember him coercing her and it felt very rapey. but yeah he doesn’t force any other woman. they were all willing. in fact they were took initiative as far I remember.

I don’t think you’d have to worry. I can see that they’ve already changed so much just from reading the description and character names. in the novel, her first life as shen jia lan doesn’t have much significance. which is already a huge change from the drama.
in the novel the ML is called Lin Jin Lou and he’s already married and almost a decade older than the FL in her second life (agin, major change). there’s no engagement. in her 2nd life she is born as a house servant in the ML’ household. he’s a huge red flag womanizer. he’s already married but his wife is even worse though. he has few concubines. he actually forces the FL to be his concubine. she rejected him as much as possible, she only accepted because she has no choice to save her father. only towards the end after so much, she accepts him. she is scared of him for majority of the novel, fearing he’ll kill her one day from anger.
it’s a hard read but the characters were written really well and they have good character development imo. the ML starts as an abusive scumbag but towards the end he kinda became better. he’s so in love with her to the point he’d die for even a glimpse of her love. definitely one of the most smitten ML ever by the end. but his actions are despicable, he’s honestly a villain, a big time black flag. the novel is very depressing imo. the things the FL goes is realistic for the era. for me the FL is the highlight, her characterization is done so well. she’s my favorite FL ever. I gave it 5 stars just for her. I liked the novel but it’s not for everyone because of its themes.
honestly, you don’t have to worry. many of the plot in the novel will not pass censorship nor will modern audiences accept it. just from the snippets and descriptions available of the drama, I can see so much has been changed from the novel. I believe they’ll change it like prisoner of the beauty. Wei shao in the novel is a scumbag lol. the drama Wei shao is so much more likable compared to his character in the novel who is terrible lol.
I wonder how they plan on adapting the novel. I doubt they can really adapt it with all the censorship. the male lead is the biggest red flag I’ve ever read about. I hope they atleast keep the essence of the characters.

I’d say it’s still with a try. I am also not a fan of action dramas but this was one is surprising long addicting. it has lot more than just action. give the first episode a try.
