The fact that is company dropped him entirely and so quickly with no attempt at defending him or saying there are misunderstandings is pretty telling.

Being completely soaked for a prolonged period of time and not drying off completely/quickly can lower your immune system. None of the options feel very real tbh in this, but there's no indication or reason why he would have already had pneumonia.

Pneumococcal bacteria can cause those things but it’s very hard to just pick that up (from going to a love motel). You generally need to be immunologically compromised first or have already had something like the flu. That’s why I think they’re trying to go with him having been soaked in the rain and not properly caring for himself.

my subs said pneumonia and meningitis which seems a bit kuch but I would assume it was from getting soaked in the rain before hand and not taking proper care as opposed to a virus.

I'd view it as more of a fantasy than a historical, so if you like that genre go for it.
