I'm hooked right from the very beginning, the story is immersive and attractive, I am liking the use of colour…
I think that the title is more a representation of the feelings and anguish that both main leads felt. All characters at a given point acted 'evil'.
Even when revenge, or anger are not the answer to violence, humans are not "holy", so "the devil" attributes more to the darkness in our minds, and what we are capable of doing at a given moment. So I think the director/writer of the story wanted to call "the devil" those feelings we harbor.
I like that this drama focuses in the good and bad of people. That a person is not made of what they did in the past, but how they change that in the present. You are remembered mostly for your legacy. No matter that one mistake, as long as you do good for years to come, thats how you will be remembered.
At the end, we dont remember both characters as being devils, but we remember them as being pitiful because there was goodness in them.

btw, have you watched Temptetion of an Angel, if yes, tell me your thoughts but don't give spoilers. XD <---- made me laugh out loud.
The thing about Temptation of an Angel is that it was a bit farfetched and not done well. Temptation of a Wife is a much better drama that follows the same plot.
In all honesty, both dramas remind me of an old drama (from either Britain or Canada, cant remember) which was done in the 80s (yeah Im old :p) and these two Kdramas took the story from there Im sure, I mean, its exactly the same plot. But that old 80s drama was awesome.
I guess I leave it up to you. Watch the first few episodes see if you like it ... although the problem with Kdramas is that even when they suck at the end, the first few episodes are really good. My favorite character was the second male lead. He is an awesome actor.

Im back LOL ... okay lets take a look at the directors:
Kim Yong Soo (MOTE) aside from the one mentioned, has done nothing that I have been interested in. No that my word would be the ultimate judge, lol, but one thing I thought the drama had forgotten was: why is he 'man of the equator'? At the end, he goes there right, but throughout the whole drama I felt like we were cheated out of that theme. Unless I didnt get the drama. O.O
Choi Young Hoon, director for Five Fingers. Has been behind Iljimae, and Painter of the Wind which is one of the most popular and loved Historical dramas. So I do have high hopes this one will be excellent. But hey! I can always be wrong hahahaha... I admit when Im at fault, so I might come back here and tell you I failed in my judgement. :p
Oh! and there is a clear reason why the drama is titled Five Fingers.

Well the friend killing the friend (or trying to) is really a dark plot. But like I said, it was kept with soft pastel colors all throughout, except for the 'friend' who most of the time wore black.
Five Fingers is dark, and is well done. The director is one to shoot big scenes with symbolism. In episode one there is one (my favorite so far) with the kid running and the ocean taking over the path, as the tides are growing higher. Its pretty amazing. I love it.
30 episodes is not bad at all if they know how to fill it in without making it draggy.

Oh forgot to say that it is super heavy. We are talking Man of The Equator with a more serious tone. Even though MOTE had a heavy plot, the colors used for the drama were always light and sort of sunny because the title has the Equator in it, and i guess the director wanted to keep the theme hopeful with bright colors. But Five Fingers is DARK, DARK I tell you, DARK!! lol You might like it :)

Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.... you girls have been lost. You and Jezzy, but I still love you <3
Yeah Im watching Five Fingers, I know, I hate that because its not Arang or Beautiful You they are not paying too much attention to it, and subbing it rather slow.
I love Joo Ji!! Wouldn't miss his comeback for the world.

Okay Bladey, when you do, we can start uncovering the layers of Lee Joon's character who was, I dare say, even more of an antagonist than JooJi's in The Devil.

Well I didnt actually recommend that one because I fear Rita-chan would be tired of my recommendations one day haha... but yeah, you like well written characters and this seems to go in that direction with the emotions is trying to explore between both leads, and they are still kids at this point which brings me to say, well acted by the little ones ^^ Let me know if you start it.
They are taking their time subbing.

Right... like all the shots of him facing the sun light, alone in a dark room. That shows the struggle of his soul.

Oh I come back to mention: Lee Joon Hyuk's character in Equator Man... so much like JooJi's and UTW, both together, in The Devil. Don't you think?

Yes. I think to get to the mental state in which JooJi's character was, one needs to have gone through the hardest, most painful emotions as a very young person, which is what happened to him. So I pity him more than any of the other characters, although like I said, Um Tae Wong's character, being the anti-hero is always a favorite among anti-heroes in other dramas. :)
I hope she changes her mind about him too.

Yep... I don't think there is another crime/suspense that can equal this one, but from the ones I have suggested, the characters are as complicated and the plots in some are well crafted.

I, in the contrary, cannot stop pitying him. I also feel bad for Um Tae Wong's character but he is more leveled than JooJi's. Where one is struggling with his past and what he did -still, he is not entirely lost to the darkness to which your mind can place you in -the other is struggling with his feelings of abandonment by life/society/fate, I dare say God. He has fallen deep in darkness and even when he is reaching towards the light, he is in too deep now to let go. He has lost some sanity which is needed to step out of the darkness, and in his despair he is taking Um Tae Wong's character with him. You are not watching a hero slowly evolving into something better, you are watching a hero slowly becoming an anti-hero, someone with whom we cannot connect any longer, but feel their pain nonetheless.

Hahaha Bladey you are spot on. When I thought about adding it or not, I was thinking it was not really suspense, but more like mystery and drama, which not necessarily has to have the suspense we crave.
I am watching The Devil again with a friend, and although it is pretty clear from episode 3 what he is trying to do, it is not who is the culprit as much as why and how? And like you said, the momentum is spot on in that drama, I loved it so much. I cannot even say how my heart flipped with every episode, and at the end of episode 6 things start to get even more heavy... My friend does not like JooJi's character because he is too conniving. It is the fact that he had taken so much time to planned the revenge so perfectly what creeps her out.

Bladey, to be honest it is not the best drama for me either. But I was extremely hooked by the mystery of Vic's character. I love complicated minds, like serial killers, frustrated souls, tormented musicians, etc. I think, anti-heroes and antagonists are the best characters to act, because they are complicated and rich in emotions that -if acted well -can be deeply felts by the viewer. A protagonist is always more plain and common because everybody likes a good person, but we are often pulled and attracted to the flaws of those who are not as simple as just being evil.
I think you picked the drama with a plot that is not as well crafted as The Devil. I did put it in the list, but I was also thinking I might have made a mistake by adding it to the recommendations.
LIAR GAME is a better written plot.

Haha Rita-chan!!
Which new Jdramas are you watching? I'm waiting for Priceless and another one which title escapes me right now.
Yes Im watching Arang, but not because its popular, you know I love underdogs and if I ever like anything that is popular is because of other reasons.
Im also watching Five Fingers, and May Queen, both very good starts, lots of drama and complicated emotions.Five Finger is my favorite so far and I have only watched one episode. Piano, tormented minds, and drama at is best!! Can't miss it.
Im going to send you a PM with a discussion on Arang. ^^
Im still at it, I mean my writing. I have changed all the things you pointed out, and I gave a face to that mysterious man on the desert who's name also changed to Iz, still 2 letters, although he dismisses it and claims to now go by the name of Edar. Its all very dramatic, his story and their 2 letters name.
