Ok, it is true, it is not "total" failure. Some aspects, for example acting job of Lee Jun Ki. But the many failures have been enough to I don't have anymore that big expectation about the end of the series... maybe the dialogues had some responsability too. I feel like in some part there is no consistency in the behavior of the female main character.

LOL no, it's not! There are a few (a lot) of flaws, but it is in no way a "total" failure. I don't see it, anyway...

I have, since the beginning of Scarlet, been trying to pin-point what bothered me in IU, even though I, like you, think she improved A LOT and now I get it "she's always too shocked". That's exactly it, she's always with that shocked face/expression for eveeeerything, is kind of unfitting in some of the scenes... she's still much better than before, though... I also cannot hide that I think there were much better options and much better actresses for the role, but ok...
I really loved this, I wacthed (am watching) both and had noticed some of these paralels! =D

For me, both of these had things about them I didn't like. Shine was never great for me. The genres felt too mixed up..rom/com or drama? And that hair on Im! Talk about Mane of Shame! That was just cruel. But it seemed to stick with the history pretty well and the costumes of Honey Lee were AMAZING. And I am SO with you on the age thing! Jang Hyuk was way too old, looked it too, to be playing that character at this point of the character's life. If they wanted him to play So, they should have written the story for a later time in So's life.

I think SH has problems too. For me, it seems like they are trying to put too much history in this for 20 episodes. Years are going by and no one is aging. It's not like we can't fill in the holes though, so I give it some slack there. Still, the biggest part of watching a drama is living the characters lives WITH them and the drama keeps disconnecting us and then popping back into their lives for a bit. And why even bother with the time travel thing, other than to remove her from the story at the end when she wakes up! And sorry, LJK deserves a better partner! I like her fine, but not here, not this role and NOT with a man with his experience.

I love LJK, but, honestly, he is getting older and he seems to be stuck in this rut of romance and sageuks. The younger actors around him are passing him up right and left, getting major roles in dramatic, award winning dramas and movies. They get to play bad guys, guys who die (poor guy has actually asked to have a character where he dies in the end...can you imagine the fan girl outrage?). They get to play characters with layers that aren't out of a comic book. Where are his Misaengs and Dongju like Kang Ha Neul? His Grapevine, Gap Dong, Rough Play like Lee Joon? And there are even younger ones taking on diverse and challenging roles...like D.O and Park Bo Gum as serial killers. And then there is Yeo Jin Goo! I LOVE LJK. I think he is a great actor. But he is too typecast in these roles as demanded by the fan base. And I fear he is going to lose his edge as an actor as a result. Ugh. I have way too many thoughts on this. Got to stop.

I couldn't wait for Shine to end and it was only a 7 for me. Scarlet will probably be an 8 for me and I will miss it. Though it may be a struggle for me to not click on the 7.5. That puts them in the good enough to have sat through their run, but never a rewatch, and I'm left with a lingering sense of disappointment at what should have been. Especially with Scarlet.

Scarlet Heart Ryeo is a total failure.

I find both annoying in their own respective ways. I like the idea of the character vs character but I feel like no one is a winner here. I dropped Shine part way through because of scripting and male lead's annoying laugh, his character did not seem well planned out. SHR is a little easier to watch, but all the princes are annoying in their poor decision making lol.

I first saw Lee jun ki in TWO WEEKS & I was so much impressed that I watched his every drama from Hero(2009) to Moon lovers, Iljimae currently watching; but I didn't find his other works much impressive.
Thank you(2007) was the first drama I watched of Jang Hyuk. After that I've watched his Fated To Love You, Shine or Go Crazy & Beautiful Mind, A Deep Rooted Tree(currently watching) & I'm more excited to see his next project than any of Jun Ki's. so yeah, Jang Hyuk's works are more interesting to me after I saw Beautiful Mind.

I will not mince my words here...Scarlet Heart Ryeo is a total failure. :(

I am a fan of neither.. SNGC had a very experienced cast,
SH had a lot potential but didn't deliver at any point. I was really enjoying it for the first couple of episodes. But Apart from 4-5 really good actors.. everything about this felt very amateurish. Predictable story line, no-change time-skips, and some really awful acting!
So, SNGC for me.

you wrote accurately about all the female characters but why can't you compare the male actors too. it felt like you are just sugarcoating their performances.
for me, although Jang Hyuk's voice irritates at times but it was much better to watch than having to look at Jung Ki's crying face which always made me think that Wang So was very pathetic guy.
As you already said IU is not at the level to be compared with Oh Yeon Soo.
You say Kang Ha Nul had good chemistry, I just see only one expression on his face. even when he smiles it looks forced.
Moon lovers doesn't really gives any chance to princess Yeon Hwa(since they were busy making a reverse Harem for Hae Soo) but she did as much as she could. But as you brilliantly stated, Lee Ha Nui knows 'How To Be Bad'
The bitterness(+it's development) between Wang So & his wife, Wang Wook & Wang So was very well portrayed in Shine or Go Crazy.
Even the romance was much much better than Moon Lovers.
so, overall it's been Shine Or Go Crazy for me(except for it's name)
